Unapologetically Anti-Racist

(im tired of yall.jpg)

Though Chico and Kris have said wise things – many of which I think have made me a better student, writer, and person overall – I hate to admit the most memorable are the stupid shit that have gone through my ears, squinted my eyes, and twisted my neck.

If you think I’m vaguing you, probably. If you think I took you out of context, no the hell I did not. These are all verbatim so if you think I’m misquoting you, that means a selection of you have said variations of the same thing. Lord have mercy.

-You know… like temples! (Does the :ok_hand: emoji)

-Why are we still talking about race?

-Black culture = thugin’, gangsta

-Yeah I’m only here for anime.

-Japan made video games.

-I don’t know if Alaskans are Asian Americans but … (five minutes about cultural appropriation.)

-Race didn’t matter in Ghost in the Shell.

And here are the things yall have done that I can’t believe have happened.

-After hearing an APIA talk about their experiences briefly because hey that shit is traumatic and rehashes some things, one of you saltines will say something like, “Yes! And I agree, it’s like (insert the same god damn thing they just said).”

-Not believing you liking anime/manga/consumable media doesn’t excuse you from racism.

-looking at us with those fetish eyes, especially women and femmes

-prefacing each question/statement with “I’m not racist but…”, especially during break and whispering it to your yt friend

-a person of color weaponizing their melanin to claim racism isn’t real and attempting to invalidate other poc who have experienced racism

-STOP. APPROPRIATING. AND. ERASING. TO. COPE. I. DONT. CARE. HOW. LONELY. YOU. ARE.

-visibly being uncomfortable when poc talk about antiblackness and white supremacy that you have most definitely benefited from

-noticing the immediate reactions from poc about something you’re unsure of and continuing to keep talking about/doing it because you’re just a clueless white person who didn’t know any better

-making the space uncomfortable and exclusive

-turning the conversation to talk about your whiteness when this is a class about ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER AMERICANS (ie prefacing im white but i think…, we’re talking about a culture specific occurrence but then trying to find the white synonym, etc.)
