Yotes Dig Up Geoducks, 5-1

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Brittney Lacey scored twice as the College of Idaho Coyotes shot past the Evergreen Geoducks, 5-1, in a Cascade Conference women’s soccer match on Friday afternoon at Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.

The Yotes got on the board in the 18th minute after a foul by Evergreen in the box provided College of Idaho with a penalty kick and Lacey converted for the 1-0 lead.  C of I added another score shortly before halftime as Bri Blair sent in a corner in the 41st minute that found the forehead of Hallie Taufoou, who then directed the ball to the head of Jessica Ayala, who put it into the net for the 2-0 lead.

Evergreen finally responded in the 51st minute as Rayna Murphy (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris HS) dribbled up the left side and finished unassisted, firing the ball past C of I keeper Melissa Holmes-Joseph to cut the Yotes lead to 2-1.

It didn’t take much longer for the Yotes to build the lead back up to two goal as Sarah Hicks put a shot on net that was deflected over the head of Lauren Davidson for C of I’s third goal of the match.  College of Idaho continued to pull away in the 73rd minute as Lacey earned her second goal of the match, this time on the assist from Ayala, to push the lead to 4-1.  The final goal came in the 85th minute as Natasha Rooney sent a pass to McKenzie Anderson, who one-timed it from about 15 yards out for the score.

College of Idaho held a 16-11 advantage on shots, as well as a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.  Holmes-Joseph finished with three saves for the Yotes before being replaced by Aimee Pierson in the 81st minute.  Kaitlin MacKenzie (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) had five first-half saves for the Geoducks while Davidson had one stop in the second half.

Evergreen wraps up the home portion of the 2012 schedule on Saturday when they play host to Eastern Oregon.  College of Idaho continues the road trip as they visit Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash.  Both matches are set for 3 p.m.
