Slow Start Dooms Geoducks in Loss to Loggers

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Puget Sound Loggers scored the game’s first 10 points as the Evergreen Geoducks fell, 77-65, in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Wednesday night at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.

Going nearly four minutes before getting on the scoreboard, the Geoducks (1-7) finally opened up their scoring on a three-pointer by sophomore Frankie Johnson (Renton, Wash./Hazen HS).  The Loggers (4-4) pushed the lead back into double digits just over halfway through the period but Evergreen cut the gap to just six heading into halftime, trailing 33-27.

In the second half, the Geoducks battled with the Loggers early but Puget Sound slowly began to pull the game out of reach as the differential was in double digits most of the period.  A free throw by Marc Taylor (Boise, Idaho/Skyview HS/Edmonds CC) with 53 seconds got Evergreen back within nine at 72-63 but it was too little, too late as Puget Sound earned the 77-65 win.

Evergreen was led by a game-high 21 points from Kyle Calhoun (Seattle, Wash./Hazen HS/Marshalltown CC).  Taylor picked up the double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Johnson also added 11 in the loss.  The Geoducks shot well from the charity stripe, making 15-of-18 attempts for 83.3%.

Puget Sound was led by 16 points each from AJ Maw and Erin Barber.  Dan Cheledinas came off the bench to add 15 points while Rex Nelson finished with 14.  Nick Holden rounded out the Loggers in double-digits with 10 points.  UPS shot 50.9% on the night, making 29-of-57 attempts from the field.

The Geoducks will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host their final game of 2013 when they take on Lewis-Clark State. Tip with the Warriors is set for 4 p.m. at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.
