The Evergreen State College (TESC)/Thurston County Food Bank (TCFB) Satellite Site’s Weekly Operation is every Tuesday, from 4-6pm, in the CCBLA Lobby: Sem II E2115

Thurston County Food Bank TESC Satellite Poster (For More Info)

The Evergreen Campus Food Coalition has been participating in a partnership between Evergreen’s Office of Student Affairs, the Center for Community-Based Learning and Action, and the Thurston County Food Bank (TCFB) to establish an official TCFB Satellite location at the College to better serve the campus community, and offer another site to serve the community at large. We are very excited to announce the opening of this satellite site of the TCFB. The TESC Food Bank Satellite will open again this coming Tuesday, and will operate from 4 to 6 pm in the Center for Community-Based Learning and Action (CCBLA) in Seminar II E2115*. It will operate every Tuesday afternoon through the end of Spring quarter. Plans for Summer are developing as well.

*You may remember receiving the campus-wide notification about this exciting development, but in the draft Art Costantino sent out, we failed to include the cluster letter within the Sem II complex. I’ve since added the E. Please inform folks that it’s in E2115.

Through the new Satellite site, members of the College community and residents of Thurston County will be able to obtain one bag of non-perishable basic food items intended to provide one week of assistance (vegetarian bags will be available by request) on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 pm in the CCBLA. Individuals accessing this service will be asked to complete an intake form and provide identification if possible. Those who complete an intake form at Evergreen or another location of the TCFB are eligible for the service 15 times during the year from the Evergreen Satellite or any other location of the TCFB. The impact of the Evergreen Satellite will be assessed toward the end of Spring quarter in order to determine Summer and Fall continuation.

The current Campus Food Pantry located in Police Services will continue to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Pantry will provide one or two items for immediate need. Identification is not required to obtain items from the Pantry.

We encourage you to join us in continuing to address hunger in our local community. There are many ways to do so:

  • Volunteer to assist with the new Evergreen Satellite Food Bank or the Campus Food Pantry by e-mailing the CCBLA (ccbla@evergreen.edu)
  • Volunteer to assist the Thurston County Food Bank in Olympia by emailing the CCBLA (ccbla@evergreen.edu)  Volunteers are needed for the following:

o       Thurston County Food Bank Olympia Downtown

o       Thurston County Food Bank Gleaning Program

o       Thurston County Food Bank School Gardens Program

  • Contribute nonperishable items directly to the TCFB or the Campus Food Pantry.
  • Make a financial contribution directly to the Thurston County Food Bank
  • Make a one-time financial contribution to the Campus Food Pantry or an ongoing contribution through payroll deduction by contacting Ed Sorger (x6155).

We thank everyone who is trying to provide food in our community and especially the Thurston County Food Bank.

Additionally, we invite you to join us in attending this year’s Farmworker Justice Panel, which will be part of a very active week of events at the ever-lovely Synergy Conference at the College, with programming spanning May 8-11th: there are a couple of big food-centered events that will include the Farmworker Justice Panel (from 1-3PM, as part of Alice Nelson and Diego De Acosta’s program the Spanish Speaking World); the Rachel Carson Forum (which will be held on May 10th); a forum about third-party metrics and self-op food service at Evergreen, hosted by Emma Brewster, NW Regional Coordinator for The Real Food Challenge, will take place on Wednesday May 8th starting at 4:30pm in LIB 4300.

Finally, we’d like to float it out to all of you that we would really appreciate your supportive presence at our operational budget meeting, which is slotted for April 22nd at 3:15pm. If you are available, we would love to have you there with us as we seek funding for next year’s important work.

We invite you to join us in this year’s Farmworker Justice Dialogue! Your presence will carry forward the work of this year’s Dialogue, and will deepen our campus understanding of the complex social dimensions of food and farming. Through the Dialogue, we hope to highlight local solutions as part of a broader conversation addressing sustainability and social justice as national (and more broadly, global) issues.

The Farmworker Justice Dialogue is an annual event at TESC, and has been made possible through connections and relationships forged by Evergreen’s Center for Community-Based Learning and Action (CCBLA), and serves the campus community as a dialogue that addresses not only concerns about shortcomings in our food system, but also celebrates the incredibly inspiring, and indeed very hopeful opportunities to cultivate a more sustainable and socially just future, together.

We hope to explore the multi-faceted issues under the umbrella of farmworker justice in this dialogue, by bringing key stakeholders and community representatives together to address the continuum of challenges and change, from the field to the table.

On behalf of all of us working to bring the Farmworker Justice Dialogue to campus this year, we thank you for your time and effort, and are deeply grateful for the engaged attention and participation you bring to this vital conversation.

We’ll see you there!
