The Nature Conservancy’s Washington Conservation Science Program works with public and private agencies and institutions and on ecological monitoring, research, conservation planning, and adaptive management to improve conservation.
The Nature Conservancy works on many projects in Washington. On the Washington coast they promote sustainable fisheries, work with conserving the ocean habitat, and perserving forest and rivers. On the Puget Sound they started Farming for Wildlife. Farming for Wildlife is a project to create a sustainable landscape for a agricultural community to thrive in. In Eastern Washington science projects are enacted that conserve critical forests, sage lands and waters that support life.
The Nature Conservancy has other projects in Washington that are not location based. Projects that model of the impact of climate change on Washington’s biodiversity are being researched, along with Collins Projects and conservation planning. The Collins Project is promoting choice stewardship within our agricultural community. Conservation of biodiversity is attained by identifying critical lands and waters in Washington and working to conserve those areas.

As a region, the CRD Board has set a target of reducing emissions by 33% below 2007 levels by 2020. Through leadership at the regional level and by supporting local governments in developing and implementing bylaws, programs, events and initiatives, we can achieve our goal.

Adaptation is needed now because the climate is already changing. Adaptation aims to enhance the livability of, and quality of life in our communities in the future. It will also reduce health risks and insurance costs, while protecting other investments. Climate change will create major challenges to the way we manage our resources and the services that the CRD delivers throughout the community. Our mission is to help the community to preserve open space, working lands and habitat in Jefferson County on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. Landowners work with a Land Trust when they wish to permanently protect wetlands, floodplains, farmlands, wildlife corridors, and scenic areas from inappropriate development.
Jefferson Land Trust provides many services to landowners throughout our area. We help choose protection strategies that meet landowners’ conservation and financial needs.
The Land Trust may become the owner of a particular piece of property, or we may hold the development rights transferred by a conservation easement. Through transferring ownership or development rights to the Trust, a property owner may gain access to reductions in both federal and state taxes.
