The Council of Canadians: For Social Justice

The Council of Canadians works to protect Canadian independence by promoting progressive policies on fair trade, clean water, energy security, public health care, and other issues of social and economic concern to Canadians.

They develop creative campaigns to put some of the country’s most important issues into the spotlight. We work with a network of over 70 volunteer chapters to organize speaking tours, days of action, conferences and demonstrations. The Council also produce research reports, create popular materials, and work with individuals and organizations across the country and around the world. They do all of this to ensure that governments know the kind of Canada we want.

The Council does not accept money from corporations or governments, and is sustained entirely by the volunteer energy and financial assistance of its members.

The International Institute for Sustainable Development is a Canadian-based, international public policy research institute for sustainable development.

IISD has chosen to focus on topics that are ripe for transformation—where a shift in policy has the potential to snowball and, before too long, to change the nature of the game. It is only through a focus on game-changers that we will make up the sustainability deficit that has accumulated and move towards a better future.

Puget Sound Partnership

The Puget Sound Partnership is a community effort to restore and protect the Puget Sound. They priorities cleanup and improvement projects, coordinate federal, state, local, tribal and private resources. The Puget Sound Partnership works with salmon recovery, and oil spills  and ECO Net (Education, Communication and Outreach Network)

Initiative for Rural Innovation and Stewardship

The Initiative for Rural Innovation and Stewardship works with the community to teach development for sustainable rural communities and natural resources-based economies by implementing projects across North Central Washington. One project they have done is Classroom in Bloom which is a one-half acre farm on a shared campus for the Methow Valley. Initiative for Rural Innovation and Stewardship has three programs that they take part in, Regional Food Systems, Nature of Place in North Central Washington, and Healthy Lands. These programs help the community though education, promote biodiversity in the ecosystem, and produce and promote exchange of food in North Central Washington.

Washington State Department of Natural Resources

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources works with conservation and restoration, geology, earth, aquatic and marine sciences, forestry, forest health and forest ecology, watersheds, wetlands, and reparian sciences and State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA). With this work they help to conserve and restore natural resources.

Methow Conservancy

“Methow Conservancy has protected 7,388 acres and 26.45 miles of critical riparian shoreline habitat along the Methow River and its tributaries. Methow Conservancy works with landowners to care for their land and monitor their easement lands. A monthly natural history lecture series is hosted monthly to raise awareness about conservation issues.”

Washington Conservation Commission

The Washington Conservation Commission leads Washington State residents to us wise stewardship, conservation practices and to protect our soil, water, and other related natural resources by implementation of incentive-based practices where agricultural viability is still intact.

The Washington Conservation Commission works on many programs that work towards their goal. These programs are, Farmland Preservation, Irrigation Efficiencies, Livestock Program, Professional Engineering, Rule Making, Voluntary Stewardship, Water Quality Grants,  The Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program: Changing Stream Corridors Throughout Washington (CREP), and Conservation Practices Data System (CPDS).

The Nature Conservancy in Washington

The Nature Conservancy’s Washington Conservation Science Program works with public and private agencies and institutions and on ecological monitoring, research, conservation planning, and adaptive management to improve conservation.

The Nature Conservancy works on many projects in Washington. On the Washington coast they promote sustainable fisheries, work with conserving the ocean habitat, and perserving forest and rivers. On the Puget Sound they started Farming for Wildlife. Farming for Wildlife is a project to create a sustainable landscape for a agricultural community to thrive in. In Eastern Washington science projects are enacted that conserve critical forests, sage lands and waters that support life.

The Nature Conservancy has other projects in Washington that are not location based. Projects that model of the impact of climate change on Washington’s biodiversity are being researched, along with Collins Projects and conservation planning. The Collins Project is promoting choice stewardship within our agricultural community. Conservation of biodiversity is attained by identifying critical lands and waters in Washington and working to conserve those areas.

OilWatch Alaska

OilWatch Alaska monitors the activities of the oil industry and gives the public unfiltered information. They strive to reduce the power the oil industry has on the government, the media and public debate. Through activism and education, OilWatch Alaska aims to restore open government and fairness to the citizens of Alaska.
