Viva Farms

Viva Farms “provide new farmers affordable access to education, training and technical assistance; capital and credit; land and markets.”  Farmers are given a square mile of farm land to get started.  The vegetables are sold in a CSA (community supported agriculture) approach in box shares.  Its parent organization is GrowFood.org, a national organization.

EDF Renewable Energy

EDF Renewable Energy has had 25 years of experience working for the development and long term care of wind farms across the United State and Mexico (1 Project).  Their main services are Project Development, Operations and Maintenance, and Asset Management.  They have a renewable energy portfolio of over 70 renewable energy projects.  They have two projects in Klickitat, Washington, and a solar project that they helped develop in Yamhill County, Oregon.

Edible Forest Gardens

Edible Forest Gardens is a local non-profit organization that has put more than 35 Edible Forest Gardens in yards around Olympia over the past four years. They have done this using workshops where community volunteers and Evergreen students have had the opportunity to learn how to transform lawns into gardens through hands-on experience. They work with Evergreen teachers to offer permaculture learning experiences to interns and work study students.

By encouraging people to create gardens that supplement local food supplies, atmospheric CO2 emitted during transport of the food is cut out. CO2 is also taken up by the plants being cultivated.

Conservation sequesters Carbon and deforestation is a major cause of climate change Cascadia Wildlands aims to conserve wild spaces. They state on their web stite that “The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition is a non-profit citizens group founded in a historic bipartisan effort by former Governors Dan Evans and Mike Lowry. Their members consist of a diverse group of over 250 organizations representing conservation, business, recreation, hunting, fishing, farming, and community interests. They state that their “breadth and diversity is the key to our success–no one member of the Coalition could secure such high levels of funding for parks and habitat on their own.”

Transition Olympia connects and strengthens our network of individuals and groups that focus on building local resilience. We support self-reliance and an abundant, vital community that can adapt to changes in food, energy, economic, and social systems.

By working in the community with volunteers, Transition is helping the residents and business of Olympia become more green. With classes teaching about food co-ops, and a handful of online resources, the Transition website is a great place for Olympians to start their transition into the greener lifestyle.
