Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute

The non-profit organization Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute’s mission statement is
“to increase citizen involvement in decisions that affect the region’s environment.” The Institute has grown into one of the most successful organizations in the region. In addition to Community Agriculture, they have programs in Watershed Restoration, Environmental Education, and Transportation.”  These programs include watershed restoration in northern Idaho and parts of Eastern Washington, promoting alternative energy through tours and host bicycle and vanpool options.  PCEI began in 1986 and they have received many awards due to their honest and hardworking operations.

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service

Description:

NRCS offers voluntary programs to eligible landowners and agricultural producers to provide financial and technical assistance to help manage natural resources in a sustainable manner.  Through these programs the agency approves contracts to provide financial assistance to help plan and implement conservation practices that address natural resource concerns or opportunities to help save energy, improve soil, water, plant, air, animal and related resources on agricultural lands and non-industrial private forest land.

Financial Assistance Programs:

  • The Agricultural Management Assistance(AMA) provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers to voluntarily address issues such as water management, water quality, and erosion control by incorporating conservation into their farming operations.
  • The Agricultural Water Enhancement Program (AWEP) is a voluntary conservation initiative that provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers to implement agricultural water enhancement activities on agricultural land to conserve surface and ground water and improve water quality.
  • Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) is a voluntary program intended to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies while leveraging Federal investment in environmental enhancement and protection, in conjunction with agricultural production.
  • The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is a voluntary program that provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers through contracts up to a maximum term of ten years in length.
  • The Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program(WHIP) is a voluntary program for conservation-minded landowners who want to develop and improve wildlife habitat on agricultural land, nonindustrial private forest land, and Indian land.

Pacific Northwest Climate Impacts Research Consortium (CIRC)

“The Climate Impacts Research Consortium  provides information and tools for making decisions about landscape and watershed management in a changing climate. CIRC is a consortium of three multi-university organizations: The Oregon Climate Change Research Institute , including Oregon State University and the University of Oregon ;Idaho’s project on Water Resources in a Changing Climate, funded by NSF’s Office of Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research , including University of Idaho , Boise State University , and Idaho State University.”

Idaho Rivers United

Mission statement: To protect and restore the rivers of Idaho. Our focus is the ecological integrity of our rivers, but the lens we look through is citizen involvement.

 

We involve our volunteers and members in the protection of wild rivers, keeping our drinking water clean, defending at-risk populations of fish, establishment of instream flows, and minimizing the impacts of dams on Idaho’s rivers. Idaho Rivers United builds river protection campaigns that effectively team up staff and volunteers.

Northwest Association of Environmental Professionals

The Northwest Association of Environmental Proffesionals (NWAEP) is a group of Washington and Oregon environmental professionals whose goal is to provide opportunities for the professional development and recognition of members through meetings, conferences, and other activities.  According to the webpage:

Membership in the Northwest Association of Environmental Professionals is open to anyone in the Northwest who is involved or interested in the environmental professions and who conducts their work in accordance with the Environmental Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. By definition, an “environmental professional” is someone who either earns their livelihood from, or has a specific skill or experience in, one or more environmental areas. Included in this broad category are environmental managers, engineers, consultants, educators, regulators, attorneys, vendors and suppliers, technicians, activists, and students, among others.

Many members of NWAEP are also affiliated with the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP), but membership in the latter organization is not required.

They are a nonpolitical and interdisciplinary organization.  They promote advancement in scientific education, planning, research, assessment, review and management.
