According to their website, “During their 13 years of community involvement, they have given away over 1400 bikes; about 800 of those have found homes locally. The rest have been shipped around the world through connections with individuals and groups. They have sent bikes to Togo, Ghana, Latvia, Romania, Vietnam, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, and one bike to Ireland.

This truly is a community project. Were it not for continuing support from the community, this project would cease to exist. We are grateful for support.

We welcome donations of bikes, time, money and ideas. The Build-a-Bike shop is open on Sundays from noon to 4pm.”

Transportation Choices

Off the Chain Bicycle Collective

According to their website: “Off the Chain is a low cost, volunteer run bicycle collective open to the Anchorage community. Off the Chain teaches people of all ages and backgrounds how to repair bicycles and strives to increase bicycle ridership, awareness, and safety through community service and education.”

This non-profit promotes low impact lifestyles (cycling as transport).

Cascade Bicycle Club

A reduction in driving is an important aspect of behavioral change that will reduce Carbon emissions. This organization, while not working on climate issues overtly, incentives lifestyle changes through making biking an easier and realistic transportation alternative option. According to their website “Cascade Bicycle Club is a non-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington that serves more than 14,000 members and the Puget Sound bicycling community. Their mission is to Create a Better Community through Bicycling.”

Bike Farm

According to their website “Bike Farm is a non-profit, volunteer-run bicycle maintenance collective. They are all volunteers and all love bikes. They open the shop and their tools to the public five days a week so everyone can learn the joys of working on their own bike.” Reducing the use of cars/other carbon outputting transport is an important way to fight climate change. Bike Farm is a resource to do this.
