Category Archives: Stabilization Strategies

In 2004, Pacala and Sokolow published “Stabilization Wedges: Solving the Climate Problem for the Next 50 Years with Current Technologies” in the journal, Science. In this article, they outlined a multilateral approach to stabilizing climate change using existing technologies. Rather than coming up with one BIG solution to global warming – an elevator down from dangerously high atmospheric temperatures – they conceived of a stack of relatively slender “wedges” that can provide us with a way – a somewhat more gradual escalator – back down to sustainable levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

The Bikery

From their website, The Bikery uses collaborative, hands-on education in bicycles and cycling to liberate movement and increase access to knowledge, and to share the revelation that all forms of knowledge can be earned without permission. We are an all volunteer run, non-profit community bike project located in Seattle, nestled between the central district and the international district. We are here to provide the tools and resources to help you learn about your bike and fix it yourself.”

Edible Forest Gardens

Edible Forest Gardens is a local non-profit organization that has put more than 35 Edible Forest Gardens in yards around Olympia over the past four years. They have done this using workshops where community volunteers and Evergreen students have had the opportunity to learn how to transform lawns into gardens through hands-on experience. They work with Evergreen teachers to offer permaculture learning experiences to interns and work study students.

By encouraging people to create gardens that supplement local food supplies, atmospheric CO2 emitted during transport of the food is cut out. CO2 is also taken up by the plants being cultivated.

Puget Sound Clean Air Agency

The official website states that the “PSCAA is special-purpose, regional agency chartered by state law in 1967 (RCW 70.94).  While we work in partnership with the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Washington State Department of Ecology, we are a separate organization.  Our jurisdiction covers King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties, spans 6,300 square miles and is home to more than 3.5 million people — over half the state’s population.”

Mission Statement:  We work together to clean the air we breathe and protect our climate through education, incentives and enforcement.

Strategies include:

  • adopting and enforcing air quality regulations;
  • sponsoring voluntary initiatives; and
  • educating people and businesses about clean-air and climate-friendly choices they can make

“We also have certain mandates that are spelled out by the federal Clean Air Act and the Washington Clean Air Act. These include activities such as monitoring for air pollution throughout our region and regulating businesses that have the potential to cause air pollution.”

Earth Economics

Earth Economics uses principles of economics to find solutions to climate change.  Some of the services they provide, taken from their website, are:

  • Ecosystem Service Valuations:  Working with public, private and NGO agencies, Earth Economics’ Ecosystem Service Valuation (ESV) studies quantify the value of the goods and services provided by regional ecosystems. This valuation justifies the shift of investment toward environmental preservation and/or restoration.
  • Scenario Mapping and Planning:  “Working with leading systems modelers, ecologists and hydrologists, Earth Economics analyzes ecosystem services such as freshwater provisioning, carbon sequestration, flood protection, biodiversity and hurricane protection.”
  • Conversion to Sustainability: Working with the electronic recycling industry, paper mills and other industries, Earth Economics helps catalyze the shift from unsustainable to sustainable technology and industrial processes.
