Portland Permaculture Guild

The Portland Permaculture Guild is an informal group dedicated to permaculture as a system of conscious, sustainable, ecological design.  They offer classes, workshops and other activities based on public interest.  They often work with other like-minded organizations in the region to promote sustainability education and implementation.

Interior Alaska Green Star

About:

Interior Alaska Green Star is a non-profit organization that “encourages households and businesses to practice waste reduction, energy conservation and pollution prevention.” The Green Star Award program was created in 1990 by state regulators, environmentalists and business leaders to give positive recognition to organizations that exercise environmental responsibility. Interior Alaska Green Star started in 1998 and focused on the encouragement of recycling in both the domestic and corporate parts of Alaska. Since 2006, Alaska has faced many recycling hardships, but has been able to start up several different recycling programs including a computer recycling program and has many started many outreach or education programs.

From 2012 their new accomplishments include:

  • Expanding community participation in the Electronics Recycling program, especially from the business community
  • Publishing a new edition of the Fairbanks Recycling Guide in the fall of 2012
  • Expanding our Educational Programs
  • Re-engaging the local business community in the Green Star Award program

Kootenai Environmental Alliance

Mission statement:  To conserve, protect and restore the environment, with a particular emphasis on the Idaho Panhandle and the Coeur d’Alene basin.

On their website it says that the Kootenai Environmental Alliance (KEA), “is the oldest non-profit conservation organization in Idaho. Our conservation mission is unchanged since the organization’s founding in 1972. We are based in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and work throughout North Idaho”.

KEA was founded by former Idaho State Senators Art Manley and Mary Lou Reed, as well as representatives from several local and regional sporting organizations and renowned environmental attorney Scott Reed.

Idaho Smart Growth

Northwest Environmental Advocates

Mission statement:  To work through advocacy and education to protect and restore water and air quality, wetlands and wildlife habitat.

Northwest Environmental Advocates (NWEA) use strategies such as negotiation, litigation, education, community organizing, and advocacy.  This includes:

“Since 1987, the Bicycle Alliance of Washington (formerly Northwest Bicycle Federation) has been a leader at growing bicycling around the state. Washington Organic Recycling Council

About:

Washington Organic Recycling Council is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes organic recycling in Washington.  They provide a unified statewide voice for issues such as “research, education, product safety and standards, government regulations, environmental planning, trade, marketing, and public education and involvement.” They work with organic recyclers, state organizations and provide communication between the public and private sectors.
