Save Habitat and Diversity of Wetlands

Save Habitat and Diversity of Wetlands, or SHADOW, is a nonprofit organization that works to save wetlands and forests in Western Washington.  Founded in 2000, they have served 2,000 people with their preservation and educational efforts.  SHADOW’s main concern is to preserve the 5,000 year old Shadow Lake Bog, which is a peat bog located in King County.  Shadow Lake Bog stores more carbon than it releases, which makes SHADOW fit into the natural sequestration wedge.  Not only is preservation of this bog so important because of the containment of carbon, but also because Shadow Lake Bog is home to many animals and vegetation that are on the verge of extinction.  SHADOW also works to restore the health of the Watershed and offers educational tours to inspire students to help preserve their own habitats.  In 2011, SHADOW removed a stream barrier and put a bridge in its place for safe and easy access to the bog for students and restoration volunteers.  All in all, SHADOW is an honest organization that only has one full-time employee and their financial records are consistent with that.

Environmental Coalition of South Seattle

The Environmental Coalition of South Seattle is an organization that began in 1994.   ECOSS works primarily in informing families and businesses about how to save money and the planet by using energy conserving tools.  ECOSS works in conservation and prevention when it comes to the Environment.  They do this through workshops, residential outreach programs and events.  They are specifically educating the bi-lingual population in alternative means of operation in their households or work space.  ECOSS works hard to relay earth-friendly information to groups of people that would not ordinarily understand or receive it.    They are funded through grants and donations, which their financial records reflect were all used on the organization’s efforts.  With numerous success stories in South Seattle, ECOSS is an organization that fits into the “efficiency and conservation wedge because it works hard to help non-English speaking families conserve energy and switch to efficient alternatives.

Pacific Environment

According to their web page “Pacific Environment protects the living environment of the Pacific Rim. We have partnered with local and indigenous communities in Russia, China, California, and the Alaskan Arctic for more than two decades. We believe that long term environmental and social progress originates from strengthening local communities and grassroots movements, complemented with sophisticated policy advocacy at international finance and governance institutions.

We mentor, train, campaign, build networks, and provide direct financial support to activist leaders and non-governmental organizations to help them protect their communities from environmental and health threats and hold international governments, corporations, and financing institutions accountable for their policies and actions.

Together with our partners, we’ve shielded tens of thousands of acres of old growth forest; won protections for endangered species; forced oil, gas, mining, and timber companies to heed local concerns; closed polluting factories along rivers; and changed the way some of the world’s most powerful financial institutions work.”
