Preserve Our Islands

Preserve Our Islands is a watchdog organization dedicated to making sure that the mandated jobs of regulatory agencies are held up on a regional level. On a local level, Preserve Our Islands works to ensure that park management work on cleaning up arsenic, possibly failing septic systems, and low dissolved oxygen issues.

Their Mission is: “POI will continue to work on locally focused projects to tenaciously protect and preserve island habitats while at the same time branching out to work as regional regulatory “watchdog” group to ensure the protection of the greater Puget Sound nearshore.”

Idaho Native Plant Society

The official website says that “The Idaho Native Plant Society (INPS) is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to promoting interest in native plants and plant communities, and collecting and sharing information on all phases of the botany of native plants in Idaho. Pacific Northwest Salmon Center: Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group

The Calapooia Watershed Council

Viva Farms

Viva Farms “provide new farmers affordable access to education, training and technical assistance; capital and credit; land and markets.”  Farmers are given a square mile of farm land to get started.  The vegetables are sold in a CSA (community supported agriculture) approach in box shares.  Its parent organization is GrowFood.org, a national organization.

Tribal Climate Change Project

The Tribal Climate Change Project is a collaborative project between the University of Oregon Environmental Studies Program and the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station. The project focuses on understanding needs and opportunities for tribes in addressing climate change, examining the government-to-government relationship in a climate context and exploring the role of traditional knowledge in climate change studies, assessments and plans.

This project is part of the USDA Forest Service 2010 Coordinated Approach to Tribal Climate Change Research. Other Forest Service Research Stations engaged in this type of research include the  Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station and the Forest Service Northern Research Station.

Columbia Riverkeeper

Mission statement:  Columbia Riverkeeper’s mission is to protect and restore the water quality of the Columbia River and all life connected to it, from the headwaters to the Pacific Ocean.

Columbia Riverkeeper is a result of two groups, Columbia River United and Clean Water Columbia, which merged in 2000.  A public interest group working to protect the Columbia river, they remain a grassroots organization powered by the river communities.   Their strategies include pushing for enforcement of environmental laws, hands-on citizen action and community organizing.  With these strategies, Columbia Riverkeeper seeks to make a positive difference in water quality as well as climate change as a whole.
