According to the webpage this motto was “chosen as a correlary to Henry David Thoreau’s aphorism, In Wildness is the Preservation of the Wild.”

Save Habitat and Diversity of Wetlands

Save Habitat and Diversity of Wetlands, or SHADOW, is a nonprofit organization that works to save wetlands and forests in Western Washington.  Founded in 2000, they have served 2,000 people with their preservation and educational efforts.  SHADOW’s main concern is to preserve the 5,000 year old Shadow Lake Bog, which is a peat bog located in King County.  Shadow Lake Bog stores more carbon than it releases, which makes SHADOW fit into the natural sequestration wedge.  Not only is preservation of this bog so important because of the containment of carbon, but also because Shadow Lake Bog is home to many animals and vegetation that are on the verge of extinction.  SHADOW also works to restore the health of the Watershed and offers educational tours to inspire students to help preserve their own habitats.  In 2011, SHADOW removed a stream barrier and put a bridge in its place for safe and easy access to the bog for students and restoration volunteers.  All in all, SHADOW is an honest organization that only has one full-time employee and their financial records are consistent with that.

SKAGIT LAND TRUST PROGRAM

According to their website, “Skagit Land Trust was founded in 1992 to protect our region’s natural lands, open space and wildlife habitat for the benefit of this and future generations. Skagit County is renowned for its wild and scenic rivers, expansive floodplains, fertile agricultural lands, native forests and abundance of wildlife.  Located between the growing cities of Seattle and Vancouver B.C, our natural heritage continues to be lost at an alarming rate. The Trust works in collaboration with private landowners and over twenty organizations to leverage resources to achieve common land conservation goals.”

Columbia Riverkeeper

Mission statement:  Columbia Riverkeeper’s mission is to protect and restore the water quality of the Columbia River and all life connected to it, from the headwaters to the Pacific Ocean.

Columbia Riverkeeper is a result of two groups, Columbia River United and Clean Water Columbia, which merged in 2000.  A public interest group working to protect the Columbia river, they remain a grassroots organization powered by the river communities.   Their strategies include pushing for enforcement of environmental laws, hands-on citizen action and community organizing.  With these strategies, Columbia Riverkeeper seeks to make a positive difference in water quality as well as climate change as a whole.

Earth Economics

Earth Economics uses principles of economics to find solutions to climate change.  Some of the services they provide, taken from their website, are:

  • Ecosystem Service Valuations:  Working with public, private and NGO agencies, Earth Economics’ Ecosystem Service Valuation (ESV) studies quantify the value of the goods and services provided by regional ecosystems. This valuation justifies the shift of investment toward environmental preservation and/or restoration.  
  • Scenario Mapping and Planning:  “Working with leading systems modelers, ecologists and hydrologists, Earth Economics analyzes ecosystem services such as freshwater provisioning, carbon sequestration, flood protection, biodiversity and hurricane protection.”

According to their website, the Stewardship Partners “is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that helps private landowners restore and preserve the natural landscapes of Washington State.”

Their mission statement reads:

We collaborate with diverse interest groups to build bridges and find solutions that achieve mutual goals of environmental protection, economic health, and community well being.
