For this contract entitled Sustainable South Sound Local Food Internship the student will intern with Sustainable South Sound to work in conjunction with the Olympia Farmer’s Market to collect data from farmers and restaurants in order to develop and implement approaches to incorporate more local produce into the menus of Olympia Farmer’s Market restaurants. In conjunction with the SSS board, the student will also draft and edit a resolution regarding City of Olympia community gardens to be presented to the City Council. In addition, the student will read portions of The Local Food Revolution by Michael Brownlee to contextualize the importance of local food. The student will create weekly blog posts including photos and written updates. The student will present her work in a 15 minute presentation during Week 10.

What are the processes by which food is commodified and what are the potential alternatives? How does taste and the practice of critical eating studies inform these ideas? I will attend each Tuesday class meeting during the afternoon. I will complete seminar writing assignments and participate in seminar discussions as well as tasting labs and their respective written reflections. My sponsor will evaluate attendance, turned in work, and the work published on my WordPress site.
What are the roles of the local farmers, restaurants, and consumers of the Olympia Farmers market in the local food economy? In the greater Olympia area? I will serve as the Sustainable South Sound intern in working with the Olympia Farmers Market staff to develop a questionnaire and engage with restaurants and farmers to compile data regarding the use of local produce in OFM restaurants. I will post at least 10 photos of my work with the Sustainable South Sound a week with detailed captions via Instagram. I will provide weekly written blog post updates on my WordPress site.
What are the economic, community, and ecological consequences or benefits of creating a local food system from grower to retailer to consumer? I will read sections of The Local Food Revolution by Michael Brownlee. I will explore the benefits of community gardens and draft a city resolution for Sustainable South Sound regarding City of Olympia community gardens to be ultimately presented to the City Council. I will continue to attend and participate in South Sound Food System Network Meetings and Working Issue Teams I will provide weekly written blog post updates on my WordPress site. I will create a 15 minute final presentation on my work for the class to be presented Week 10.
