Bibliography

A week by week collection of the material I am reading, watching, studying, or just considering for further study in my research.

Some may be partially informally annotated.

Multi Week Readings:

Alisha Gaddis, editor. (2016). LGBTQ comedic monologues that are actually funny. Milwaukee, WI: Applause Theatre & Cinema Books.

This book is important to my objectives because it is a study in writing around elements of identity and culture specific to a culture and identity, it gives voice to writers from marginalized communities, and it gives representation to the community by creating characters with identities that are not typically proportionally represented, and often represented as tokens or heavily stereotyped characters. This work puts power back in authors hands and presents a broader range for representation.

Walidah Imarisha, editor, Adrienne M. Brown, editor, Sheree R. Thomas, writer of foreword, & Institute for Anarchist Studies, issuing body. (2015). Octavia’s brood: science fiction stories from social justice movements. Oakland, CA : [Albany, NY]: AK Press ; Institute for Anarchist Studies.
This book is incredibly important because it fits so perfectly into what I was looking for when I thought about this fiction writing project, to become more aware of writing that uses elements of social justice and social movements, identities, oppression, resistance, resilience, and political elements in general in writing in subtle or obvious ways.

Noelle Stevenson, author. (2015). Lumberjanes. Los Angeles, CA: BOOM! Box.
This comic book was important in thinking about representation and including diverse identities, as well as giving a voice and place to authors, writers, and creators from marginalized communities, without solely creating ‘issue books’ – or works that are formulated only around the issue with the identity being portrayed, such as coming out of bullying because of identity, things like this. The characters in issue books aren’t nearly as well developed or representative of the breadth of difference and similarity outside of stereotyped characters. Plus it was beautiful and an an awesome adventure!

This article and the images that went with it is an exmaple of how art and politics can be brought together for messages and for art itself, which is always a really cool dynamic I find interesting. The way the quotes fit with the images is really astounding and terrifying, and I don’t suggest looking at the images without having some relaxing things planned after, because some of them are incredibly powerful and hauting in a way.
