These projects demonstrate the capacity of undergraduate students to make significant contributions through citizen science to their community. Through plant taxonomy programs and independent learning contracts, students have generated numerous botanical illustrations and conducted floristic studies on rich ecological resources that lacked accessible information. Their work provides local awareness of these valuable ecosystems and a basis for important restoration and conservation work.
In spring 2012, Evergreen students and local experts in prairie ecology joined forces to create the first draft of a Field Guide to the Plants of the South Sound Prairies, a book to aid in the identification of prairie plants, as well as serve as a resource for information about the natural and human history of south Puget Sound prairies.
Puget Prairie Flora Project
A floristic study of The Evergreen State College’s 1,000 acre campus and surrounding forests was conducted by Sam Lohmann, one of Frederica Bowcutt’s independent learning contract students.
Evergreen Campus Flora
Students in the 2013 Picturing Plants program generated nearly 50 pen and ink illustrations of vascular plants in Sun Lakes State Park. A floristic study of the park was also conducted by Heron Brae, one of Frederica Bowcutt’s independent learning contract students.
