Public Comments

Zach Flag is a senior and member of the Campus Food Coalition. He expressed interest in becoming a GSU Representative. However, he cannot run for GSU this year due to the regulations of GSU elections. He encouraged GSU members to revised the constitution and allow transfer/non-first year students to run in the fall elections.

Real Food Challenge: asking the president to sign a commitment to increase the purchase real food (local, organic food)

  • A committee would be formed to discuss comprehension food policy at Evergreen State.
  • two student positions
  • funding from GSU budget
  • similar to the budget of election commissioners
  • students will be chairing the committee
  • The Committee would also consist of administrators, staff at Aramark, Flaming Eggplant, and Members from the Organic Farm

-think about it during the break

detail job descriptions will be presented at next’s GSU meeting

The committee would be promoting the GSU

students will be elected along with GSU candidates at the end of the school year for the following school year

It would be an official president committee(sub-committee under campus affairs)

Concerns:

The power dynamics between students and administration. Jessie ensured that students would have an equal vote on the committee.

Challenges:

  • where to put our money in buying organic and local food?
  • committee will determine that
  • This committee would also connect the organic farm with Aramark.
  • Encourage Aramark to purchase more produce from the organic farm
  • Vote on it first meeting in winter quarter
  • Contribute an effort to increase real food on campus
  • Evergreen would be the second Aramark school and first public school to sign with the Real Food Challenge.

Currently, there is not a proper way to vote off officers in the amended by-law section.

sub-section “Officer Removal”

three different processes

Clusters have the responsibility to remove coordinators and replace the position within 48 hours

Concerns: power dynamics between coordinators and members with clusters, have a group wide initiative to replace coordinators

amend bill

write up an official amendment

table discussion

Special Initiative Request

new structure

new meeting

A desire in increase in stipends

current stipend analysis

more money to reflect the work of individual officers

new system-more effectively and paid more accurately

current proposed stipend structure

Concerns:

  • Step away from egalitarian structure
  • Increased stipends, present ourselves in a negative light to students
  • Coordinators should be aware and accept the extra workload
  • Create a sense of rivalry within GSU members
  • School is in a budget crisis
  • Money is coming from S&A, still comes from the school

By-Laws amendments is an experiment that will be tested during winter and spring terms

people are willing to work, the funding structure will not change the desire to work hard

recognize that students would need to pay to the level of the workload

can be beneficial and an incentive for students

accepting more responsibility, representatives need a more fair wage

see if the structure works for a quarter

Tom: S&A board members make the same amount as the GSU, they meet twicely, must make a fair argument to the S&A members

uphill struggle due to budget cuts

be realistic in your expectation

present to the student body

Nick’s Special Initiative Request

credit option

2 credits

officer role, cluster coordinator, etc

GSU already has a credit option (1 credit)

meeting next week with Sarah Martin

GSU work does not qualify as academic credit

think about it during break
