OLYMPIA, Wash—The Evergreen State College lost their second game in one week’s time at the hands of Westmont College of Santa Barbara, California after losing an exhibition against cross-town rivals St Martin’s University on Tuesday. The Geoducks (1-1)scored the first six points of each half and led by as much as 13 points before Wesmont (2-0) rallied back to capture the victory 86-78 at the CRC Gym.
Two Westmont players had double-doubles in their winning effort. Evan Haines (Bellevue, Wash. / Bellevue Christian HS) had 18 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Blake Bender racked up 16 points and 12 rebounds. Wesmont’s Dan Rasp (Camarillo, Cal. / Camarillo HS) led all scorers with 22 points.
The Geoducks struggled to rebound against the out of state foe as their rebound total was almost doubled by the Warriors 51-26.
Evergreen senior Josh Troyer (Vancouver, Wash. / Evergreen HS/ Lower Columbia) was held to just eight points and two rebounds and shot 3-9 from the field. The scoring woes continued as Evergreen’s leading scorer Mo Tolliver (Tacoma, Wash. / Mt. Tahoma HS) shot 4-13 from the field and 1-4 beyond the 3-point arc. Other Geoducks in double figure scoring were Tyrell Dixon (Tacoma, Wash. / Mt. Tahoma HS) with 10 points, two assists and Johnny Sarysz (Seattle, Wash. / Lindbergh HS/ South Puget Sound) with 11 points and two steals.
Head coach Arvin Mosley Jr. is not ready to push the panic button just yet and is continuing to see things that he likes from his young team. “We’re building a culture here,” said Mosley in response to the Geoducks early season efforts. “We’ve got a team that keeps fighting, they’re doing what I ask of them, they’re listening. I like this group,” Mosley adds that it’s just a matter of time before his team gets the rhythm down for their zone defense.
The Geoducks leave for Denver, Colorado for a two game road trip where they will take on Metro State College and Colorado School of Mines November 19-20.
