OLYMPIA, Wash. – With strikers in the right place at the right time, the Trinity Lutheran Eagles used a pair of goals following deflections to get past the Evergreen Geoducks, 2-0, in a non-conference men’s soccer on Friday afternoon on the Evergreen Pitch in Olympia, Wash.
The teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half but Trinity Lutheran (1-0-0) put pressure on Evergreen (0-1-0), outshooting the Geoducks 10-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Eagles continued to pressure and it didn’t take long for the visitors to get on the scoreboard as Reymundo Mirando took advantage of a bobbled save by Evergreen’s Mitch Treend (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie HS) in the 49th minute and finished from point blank range.
The offense continued to shine for Trinity as they stayed on the offensive for much of the second period. Another deflection set up the Eagles second goal as Sergio Martinez took a rebound straight off the post and finished on an empty net in the 66th minute to give Trinity the 2-0 win.
Trinity outshot Evergreen 23-3 on the afternoon though Treend was strong in his collegiate debut, making five saves after coming on in the second half as a substitute for Christian Petit (Sprint Branch, Texas/UTSA).
Evergreen will have some time to recover before taking the pitch next on Sept. 3 when they play host to 20th-ranked University of Great Falls.
