Please share with your students interested in summer employment at the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge.

We are currently recruiting for STEP positions at Charles M. Russell (CMR) NWR. CMR is located in north central/eastern MT surrounding the Fort Peck Reservoir. CMR stretches for 135 miles along the Missouri River and reservoir and covers 1,100,000 acres. We have three remote field stations, Sand Creek on the west end of the refuge, Jordan on the south side and Ft Peck on the east end of the refuge. We have a need for one student to work in the Ft Peck Interpretive Center, and one to three students for Sand Creek. The number of STEP positions may vary depending on our final budget. Seasonal housing is available for a nominal fee at all field station locations.

The refuge is managed for elk, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, big horn sheep, sage grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, grassland birds, prairie dogs and black footed ferrets. We are looking for at least one student to work with our biologists doing habitat surveys, bird surveys and assist to a graduate research student with a fire/plant study from the Sand Creek field station. We are also looking for one to two students to work at the Interpretive Center at Ft Peck answering questions about the refuge wildlife, paleo, and cultural resources. Also they will assist with other interpretive and educational programs plus some refuge management activities with the Ft Peck station manager. All our summer students have the opportunity to experience a variety of activities which in the past included black-footed ferret surveys, maintenance projects, prairie dog dusting, fencing, noxious weed work, turtle work, prescribed and wild fires. If you are interested in any of these positions, please send a cover letter indicating which position or positions you would like to be considered for, a resume and a copy of your transcript. Eventually we will require a letter from the admissions office stating you will be a full time student for the Fall semester. You can also send your info via e-mail to beverly_skinner @fws.gov. Please have applications to our office at the address below by February 7, 2011. If anyone would like more information, please give me a call.
Thanks for your interest.
