We are seeking a motivated field assistant for our Spotted Rose Snapper study in Costa Rica. We will be conducting experimental fishing trips to gather information on the population structure of the snapper.  This project is part of a larger effort to gain a certificate of sustainability for local fishers.  The volunteer will gain valuable field experience in marine conservation, and have an opportunity to work with a highly respected conservation organization, PRETOMA (www.pretoma.org).

We will be collecting data at night aboard small boats on the Pacific Ocean.  There will be time to sleep on the boat, but don’t expect to sleep well.  If you are prone to seasickness, this position may not be for you.  There will be some after hours work involving shared data entry and preparation for the following trip.  It is essential to have a good attitude, be ready and eager to learn, and always be willing to work hard.  We will not fish every night to allow time to catch up on sleep or travel locally.

QUALIFICATIONS:

– Applicants must know how to swim, be physically fit, and love the outdoors

– Undergraduate or recent college graduate with coursework in ecology, marinescience, biology, and/or environmental science.

– Previous field experience preferred, experience working on small boats a plus

– Some Spanish would be very useful

– Familiarity with spreadsheet software

– Positive and flexible work ethic, and enthusiasm

TRAVEL DATES:

June 15 – August 10, 2011

This is a complete volunteer position, meaning that assistants will need to pay for their plane tickets, travel, etc. This will cost roughly $10-20/day for food, plus airfare (~ $700-$850) and bus travel (less than $20 each way).  Accommodation will be provided at a cost of $500 for the duration of the position.  Accommodation is rustic, and private quarters are not guaranteed.  There will be a kitchen, so we can keep food costs down by cooking at the house.  Volunteer must have health insurance.

TO APPLY:  Please send a brief statement of interest, resume, unofficial copy of transcript and references to Dr. Elise Granek at egranek@pdx.edu. Deadline is rolling.
