Position Title: Wildlife Education Specialist (1 Position)

Project Location: Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex, South Coast Refuge Office,

83673 North Bank Lane, Bandon, OR 97411

Term of Service: February 1, 2012 through May 31, 2012

Position Summary: The Specialist will intern for Shoreline Education for Awareness and the

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Specifically, the specialist will assist in implementing

environmental education programs for school aged children on the function of marine and coastal

estuarine ecosystems with particular emphasis on the wildlife of these ecosystems. The direct

service project will be to bring increased understanding and awareness of coastal wildlife

conservation to schools through both classroom and field based environmental education

programs.

General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):

• Foster an appreciation, understanding and responsibility for coastal wildlife and habitat

among local communities.

• Assist in organizing and teaching monthly in-class lessons to 4th- 6th grade classrooms

participating in the Shorebird Sister Schools Program.

• Assist Free Flight Bird Rehabilitation Center in scheduling and recruiting local schools to

participate in programs focusing on bird biology and ecology using live birds of prey. Assist in

the development of educational programs using live non-releasable raptors.

• Assist with general office duties directly related to outreach and education.

• Assist Shoreline Education for Awareness with the development of environmental education

and interpretation programs using multimedia systems.

Position Requirements:

• U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.

• Bachelor’s Degree, or higher, in the field of natural resources.

• Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A cooperative manner and the ability to work as part of a team and independently.

• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and extensive

overnight travel.

• Withstand adverse weather conditions including incessant rain and biting wind.

• Experience with and a desire to work with children in both a classroom setting and outdoors.

• Familiarity with marine and estuarine ecosystems.

• Good written and oral communication skills.

Term of Service: January 3, 2012 through August 31, 2012

Position Summary: The Coordinator will intern for Shoreline Education for Awareness and the

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Specifically, the Coordinator is responsible for organizing,

coordinating and implementing outreach and environmental education programs for school aged

children and the general public on the function of marine and coastal estuarine ecosystems with

particular emphasis on the wildlife of these ecosystems. The direct service project will be to bring

increased understanding and awareness of coastal wildlife conservation to schools, visitors, and

residents through both classroom and field based environmental education programs, slide

shows, festivals, and special events.

General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):

• Assist refuge friends groups with the development of environmental education programs.

• Assist refuge friends groups with the development of outreach materials.

• Foster an appreciation, understanding and responsibility for coastal wildlife and habitat

among local communities.

• Take the lead in organizing and coordinating monthly in-class lessons to 4th-6th grade

classrooms participating in the Shorebird Sister Schools Program including leading field trips.

• Assist with the planning and implementation of refuge outreach programs and special events

for all ages that focus on wildlife conservation and the effects of global climate change on

estuaries.

• Serve as a rocky shore and seabird interpreter at popular state park and refuge viewing decks

along the coast that overlook seabird and marine mammal rookeries.

• Organize, advertise and lead water-based canoe and kayak interpretive tours through Siletz

Bay and Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuges.

• Assist with general office duties directly related to outreach and education.

Position Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree, or higher, in the field of natural resources.

• U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.

• Possession of a valid driver’s license.

• Ability to drive a truck with a boat trailer attached.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A cooperative manner and the ability to work as part of a team and independently.

• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some weekends, evenings, and extensive

overnight travel.

• Experience with and a desire to work with children in both a classroom setting and outdoors.

• Familiarity with marine and estuarine ecosystems.
