Job Title: GIS Student Intern

Salary Range: $14.04 – $16.69/Hourly

Job Summary

The GIS Student Intern will be a member of a larger team of GTS Analysts and Developers.  Interns will be asked to help create maps, atlases, perform data/spatial analysis, complete data requests, as well as support longer term projects.  Benefits of this internship include on-the-job training in GIS desktop technology and skills, exposure to project management methodologies, as well as web and mobile technology. The Intern will be required to work 20 hours a week during the school quarter.  During the summer quarter, the Intern will be required to work up to 40 hours a week.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Complete ad-hoc customer requests for GIS mapping, analysis, and data maintenance projects under the supervision of GIS Analysts.
  • Document and track GTS Service Requests.
  • Create and review project documentation.
  • Follow industry and team’s best practices and standards for cartography and map/data generation.
  • Operate large plotters.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings.
  • Keep Analysts updated on workload.

Qualifications

  • Experience with ESRI’s Desktop GIS software (preferably v10.1) including familiarity with geoprocessing tools (clip, intersect, etc.), polygon editing, geocoding and performing spatial and attribute queries.
  • Experience with MS Excel and/or MS Access preferable.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to research projects, summarize and present conclusions.
  • Ability to self-train and trouble-shoot using online resources and adapt to the latest geospatial technologies.
  • Ability to complete project tasks within specified timeframes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the team.
  • Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Must be a full-time student in 2013 and continuing through the next academic year.

Definition of a Student Intern

  • Must be enrolled in a bona fide education program (minimum of 10 graduate credits or 12 undergraduate credits from an accredited university). Full time employees taking evening classes, those enrolled in one course, or those going to school periodically are not considered student interns.
  • During the school year must be scheduled to work 20 hours or fewer per week.
  • During special situations (i.e. specific internship programs through school) or during school breaks, can be scheduled to work more than 20 hours, up to full time, if appropriate.
  • Must be terminated as a student intern when no longer associated with an education program.
  • At-will for the duration of the student intern status.
