Volunteers Needed for Juvenile
Salmon/Fish Community
Ecology Study in the Snohomish
River Estuary and Nearshore
A collaborative team of scientists from
NOAA, the Tulalip tribe and Snohomish
County is seeking volunteers to assist in an
assessment of habitat use by the fish
community (particularly juvenile salmon) in
the tidally-influenced areas of the
Snohomish River estuary near Everett. The
sampling effort will use fyke trapping and
beach seining to capture, identify, measure,
and release juvenile fish from February through September of 2015. Volunteers need to
be in decent physical condition (adequate for hauling seine nets and traveling across
mud flats), be comfortable working from small boats, and be willing to work in adverse
weather conditions. Being on time is important as our sampling is scheduled around
the tides. During the summer, preference will be given to those who have previously
volunteered and/or can commit for longer periods of time. Due to the restrictions of our
insurance policy, volunteers need to be at least 18 years old to be included. Rain gear
and PFDs (life jackets) will be provided.
