About MEIC:

The Montana Environmental Information Center (MEIC) is a non-profit environmental advocate founded in 1973 by Montanans concerned with protecting and restoring Montana’s natural environment. MEIC is a fun, fast-paced and cutting edge, environmental organization with a long history of success in protecting Montana’s environment. MEIC works in Montana communities, the courts, the Montana Legislature, and at state agencies in defending our environment and moving proactive policy solutions. For over 40 years, MEIC has worked on a broad range of statewide environmental and “good government” issues, including global warming, coal development, renewable energy, energy efficiency, air pollution, hardrock mining, water quality, land use, corporate reform, and constitutional protections like the right to a clean and healthful environment and freedom of information.

Position Background:

The United States and Montana are in the midst of a rapid transformation to cleaner sources of energy. As this transition takes place, Montana must take advantage of the enormous opportunity for energy efficiency and clean energy. Policies and programs must be in place to thoughtfully transition to a zero-carbon energy system. Montana has enormous clean energy potential, and the ability to become a world-leader in a clean energy economy. MEIC Seeks an individual to lead our efforts on building a clean energy economy in Montana.

Position Summary:

The Clean Energy Program Director is responsible for developing and implementing MEIC’s campaigns to adopt creative and strong energy efficiency and renewable energy policies in the state, including lobbying full time at the State legislature and assisting in the development and implementation of related programs that restore and protect a clean and healthy environment. The CEP Director will utilize MEIC’s website, social media outreach, newsletter and other print publications to achieve success

Responsibilities:

  • Lead MEIC in the development and implementation of a science-based program that results in adoption of innovative policies and results in increased conservation of energy and development of renewable sources of energy while significantly reducing the state’s dependence on fossil fuel sources of energy
  • Lobby on energy and other issues as necessary including political processes and right-to-know issues at the Montana Legislature and, when necessary, the U.S. Congress
  • Develop and conduct public outreach programs to build support for a clean energy future
  • Work in collaboration with conservation partners, government officials, agency personnel, Tribes, and other interest groups
  • Prepare written and visual materials, such as policy papers, fact sheets, action alerts, newsletter articles, and social media communications that demonstrate methods and the importance of reducing global warming pollution
  • Develop strong working relationships with state, federal, tribal and local government officials and agency staff
  • Develop strong working relationships with news media
  • Help increase and develop MEIC’s presence in new media forums
  • Coordinate with state, regional, and national organizations and individuals to develop public policies promoting energy efficiency and responsible renewable energy resources
  • Assist with grant proposal writing and other fundraising efforts as needed
  • Help develop and guide MEIC’s new media campaign
  • Some weekend and evening work expected. During the biennial Montana legislative session additional work hours are required.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required. A graduate degree or comparable work in a relevant field is preferred.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate diverse interests including local citizens, conservation organizations, power supply utilities, Tribes, federal, state, and/or local agencies.
  • Likes public speaking
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse interests in an effective manner
  • Is highly motivated, a self-starter, and able to effectively manage multiple demands and deadlines
  • Is comfortable with confrontational advocacy and is resilient in high stress conditions
  • Has substantial knowledge of global warming and energy policy issues, and general knowledge of MEIC’s policy issues
  • Has a broad view of conservation issues and has demonstrated the ability to think and act strategically and enthusiastically to achieve conservation goals
  • Is able to lead and work effectively in a team environment
  • Has experience with and knowledge of the Montana Legislature or other state legislatures
  • Has demonstrated excellent analytic, critical thinking and communication skills
  • Has demonstrated the ability to write and speak concisely and persuasively
  • Is proficient in the Macintosh computer platform environment, including the Microsoft Office suite
  • Has strong traditional and new media communications experience
