Stewardship Internship
POSITION: Stewardship Intern (3 positions to fill)
REPORTS TO: Land Steward
LOCATION: Seaside, OR
POSITION TYPE: Internship, 40 hours/week
COMPENSATION: $1,000/month stipend + shared housing
TERM: June 1- July 28, 2017
CLOSES: April 1, 2017
POSITION SUMMARY: A team of 3 stewardship interns will work with North Coast Land Conservancy’s land steward treating the invasive plant policeman’s helmet throughout the Necanicum watershed. Invasive plant treatment will occur on both private and public lands. All weed removal work will be manual treatment (hand-pulling, using non-chemical methods).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Treat invasive plant populations on proposed sites
- Work in sometimes remote sites along the Necanicum River in Seaside, OR
- Participate in volunteer work parties and youth corps groups in weed removal events
- Maintain a positive attitude and collaborative work environment throughout the season
- Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma (Working towards a degree in natural resources/ecology preferred)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Botanical knowledge of local native plant species and invasive plant species
- Understanding of common treatment methods for invasive plant species
- Field skills for navigating, surveying, and treating invasive plants
- Experience working as part of a team
- Ability to work under physically demanding conditions, including cold and wet weather
- Ability to lift 50 lbs., operate hand tools, power tools, and other mechanical equipment
- Experience using and hauling canoes/ excellent swimmer
- Practical problem-solving and organizational skills with attention to detail and record-keeping
- Must be able to work some non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends
- Valid Oregon Driver’s License
