The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one (1) full time, career seasonal, Natural Resource Worker 2 position located in the Wildlife Program, Lands Division.  The position is anticipated to run from March 1 through November 30.  The duty station for the position is the Blue Mountains Wildlife Areas headquartered in Clarkston Washington with field work performed in both Asotin and Garfield Counties.

The responsibilities of this nine (9) month position directly address the sound stewardship of fish and wildlife resources by assisting wildlife area staff with land maintenance and enhancement activities on the Blue Mountains Wildlife Area Complex. The incumbent will also maintain clean and safe access areas for public use.

Duties
  • Noxious weed control. Includes operation of ATV’s, 4-wheel drive vehicles, tractors, boom sprayers, gun-jet sprayers, gas powered pumps, & back-pack sprayers. Mix herbicides and have the to follow application directions according to product labels. May be required to perform mechanical weed control using tractor powered mowers.
  • Maintain barbed-wire stock fences which form boundaries between Fish & Wildlife land, Forest Service land and private property, additionally working along elk fencing (8-foot-high, 23.5 mile long) is required. Make repairs to chain link and barbed wire fences including installing posts and braces, stretching wire, and patching broken fences. Includes operation of ATV’s, 4-wheel drive vehicles, tractors including track type and wheeled type, tracked excavators, gas powered rock drills, chainsaws, and other hand powered tools.
  • Perform habitat restoration/improvements/maintenance. Planting food-plots for big-game and upland wildlife, converting old agriculture fields from introduced grass cover to native grass cover. Includes operation of wheeled and track type tractors pulling implements such as plows, offset disks, cultivators, cult-weeders, seed drills, stiff harrows, and flex-wing mowers. Must be able to perform maintenance activities to agricultural machinery such as grease application, transfer diesel fuel, and routine maintenance.
  • Perform building and equipment maintenance. Maintain wildlife area buildings, vehicles, and equipment. Building maintenance includes repairing wind or storm damaged roofs and siding, painting, retaining walls, and hay sheds.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, AND three months of natural resource related labor experience.
OR
One year as a Natural Resource Worker 1.
Valid Washington State, or other state, driver’s license.
*Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s license after hire.
Preferred experience

  • A strong knowledge and experience working in the manipulation and management of upland plant communities is highly desirable.
  • Background in the use of agricultural practices and equipment is highly desirable.
  • Possess a current pesticide applicators license, or the ability to acquire a license within 30 days.
  • Experience in Washington native plant identification.

Supplemental Information
WORKING CONDITIONS
The successful candidate must be willing and able to:

  • Work in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain or snow up to 80% of the time.
  • Work in remote location 80% of the time.
  • Walk over difficult terrain including slippery rocks, steep banks, mud, and creek crossings.
  • Walk, bend and stoop while at times carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Work with and handle pesticides safely.
  • Work hours are 6:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Thursday, with an occasional weekend work day.
  • Load and transport equipment and gear weighing up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain.
  • Travel up to 10% of the time including occasional weekends and overnight trips.
  • Safely operate 4×4 trucks, ATV’s, tractors and implements motor.
  • Safely operate equipment such as pumps, mowers, power tools, and chemical application equipment.
