Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center is seeking dynamic Instructors for our 2017 programming season. This spectacular area achieved federal protection from logging after a very long and nationwide struggle. In this setting our Instructors are responsible for carrying out all Opal Creek programs; generally split between environmental education and hospitality. Tasks include: environmental science education, leading backcountry camping trips, cabin rental hospitality, and engaging the public.
Instructors are responsible for teaching old-growth forest ecology and cultural history curriculum to all educational groups including; elementary, middle, and high school classes, and university programs; youth, adult, and family workshops; volunteer and other private events. Throughout the season Instructors are responsible for hosting cabin renters; including driving gear shuttles, moving renters’ luggage, cleaning cabins, and hospitality. In the summer months Instructors lead youth in week-long backcountry camping expeditions in and around the Opal Creek Wilderness.
We have a small staff and everyone is required to help in all aspects of running a remote residential facility with a diversity of programs. We run our programs from the old mining town of Jawbone Flats, an off grid community three miles inside of the Opal Creek wilderness Area. This is a residential position, and staff will live at Jawbone Flats in housing provided by the organization.
