The primary focus of the internship would be visitor services. Approximately 50% of the intern’s time would be spent providing front-line interpretation in the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park Visitor Center. The park’s story focuses on an event that inspired people from around the world to move to Seattle. The intern would be responsible for interpreting Seattle’s story, assisting visitors, providing information about resources, including other Washington National Parks, assisting with special events, and delivering interpretive based programming. The rest of the intern’s time would be project based. This will include working with the In My Backyard (IMBY) program, a conservation leadership and youth outreach program which aims to connect Seattle area youth with public lands. The intern would have the opportunity to continue to build connections with other partner organizations around Seattle. They could also work with other IMBY interns to develop outreach programming to make Seattle high school aged youth feel they belong in and have access to National Parks. The intern would assist with volunteer recruitment and creating opportunities for youth from different backgrounds to become involved with the National Park Service.

This position will provide much needed support in our community outreach efforts to inform and educate the public about the opportunities available in their local public lands. The intern will support designated park units around the Seattle area in expanding service-learning, service and community engagement programs and activities at those parks/units. This work will include assisting in the development of work plans to help support and increase community learning experiences through service. Coordinating projects and activities with the guidance of park management and hosting events that provide the opportunity to increase the number of people getting involved in events.

Possess US citizenship or permanent residence

Be enrolled in a post-secondary educational program or have graduated from college within the past year

Have a strong interest — or relevant experience —  in areas pertaining to — but not limited to —  history, historic preservation, public history, museum studies, archaeology, cultural interpretation, landscape architecture, anthropology or other related fields.

Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) — helpful and more needed for some positions
