Summary

GENERAL PURPOSE
Works in a team setting under the supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator to provide varied support services to volunteer events related to restoration.  The restoration intern will work in City parks and open spaces performing a variety of tasks including tree maintenance, plant installation and maintenance, and invasive plant control. All work must ensure safety, integrity, cleanliness and aesthetic appeal, as well as meet customer needs and City standards. The work requires excellent communication and customer services skills due to considerable public contact.
HOURS AND DURATION
Works up to 30 hours a week. Hours vary on an “as-needed” basis and may include split shifts, weekends, evenings, and/or holidays.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises volunteer events.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assists with recruitment and management of volunteers

• Conducts and facilitates training for volunteers and leads volunteer events

• Support and work with a wide variety of community groups on volunteer work projects

• Assists in developing and/or maintaining cooperative efforts and relationships with public and private agencies, organizations, associations and groups

• Serve as a site or event coordinator for various special events, activities, and programs

• Proper use of hand tools and motorized equipment

• Navigating off-trail in forested backcountry settings to evaluate plant cover and conduct invasive plant control

• Planting and plant materials handling

• Weeding, watering and other horticultural activities

• Herbicide application (spraying, swabbing and injection)

• Able to work well with others, stay on task, and take direction from supervisors

• Attends staff meetings and other meetings as instructed

• Checks reports, records and other data for accuracy, completeness and compliance with established standards; compiles information and prepares routine reports

• Maintains a variety of records and files according to established procedures; creates and maintains project files; monitors project progress to assure required steps and documentation are completed; processes a variety of forms and reports

• Provides quality customer service

• Oversees the use, care and inventory of City supplies

• Opens and secures the facilities as needed

• Intermediate PC proficiency including word processing and spreadsheet software

• Ability to drive a city vehicle; have a good driving record and current and valid Washington state driver’s license and operate equipment

• Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

• Volunteer organization principles and group motivation principles

• Tools and techniques associated with restoration

• Regional native and invasive plant identification

• Modern office practices, procedures and equipment including a personal computer

• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy

• Organization and functions of a municipal government and department organization, operations, policies, and objectives

• Telephone techniques and etiquettes

• Effective customer service methods

Skills / Abilities:

• Must be self-motivated and have a positive attitude

• Maintaining detailed records and reports

• Establishing effective working relationships with City employee and the general public

• Ability to work cooperatively with other staff

• Handle multiple requests for assistance in an organized manner

• Ability to practice safety by wearing appropriate protective clothing, using safety equipment, and follow good housekeeping and safety procedures

• Current and valid Washington State driver’s license and good driving record. Evidence of a good driving record is a condition of employment and a complete driving abstract will be required

• Completion of a Nationwide and Washington State criminal history background check is required in order to determine any past conviction history of crimes against persons, sexual assault or exploitation, and sexual or physical abuse, and must be able to pass a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act

• Completion of an I-9 Form documenting eligibility to work in the United States

• Work flexible hours including nights and weekends

• Must be punctual.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Enrolled in college/university with sophomore standing or above and could be eligible able to receive college credit for this internship. Must posses and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license. Have current First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain them prior to starting work.

This position works indoors and outdoors with a wide variety of age groups from preschool through senior citizens in a variety of recreational activities. Must be able to physically work outdoors for extended periods of time in all kinds of weather conditions, and able to respond and react to an emergency in an effective manner.

The employee must be able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Outdoor recreational environment is subject to noise, seasonal heat, and adverse weather conditions.
