Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Solid Waste Planning & Program Management Division is seeking a graduate or undergraduate intern to gain experience in community engagement programs within the Community Partnerships Team. This team engages Seattle residents, businesses and community groups to prevent waste, recycle, compost, and keep our city clean. The selected intern will gain experience supporting education and community engagement through the following waste prevention programs:

  • Love Food, Stop Waste: The intern will be the lead for planning, implementing, and evaluating community engagement activities to help residents reduce the amount of edible food they throw away. Learn more about the program at www.seattle.gov/util/stopfoodwaste.
  • Waste-Free Communities Matching Grant: The grant program provides funds to support community-initiated and led waste prevention projects. The intern will help promote the grant program and assist with program monitoring and evaluation. Learn more about the program at www.seattle.gov/util/wastefreegrants.
  • Waste Prevention Planning: The intern will conduct research online and through phone and in-person interviews to learn about waste prevention programs in other jurisdictions.

Learning objectives include but are not limited to:

  • Gain a good understanding of issues involved in program management and community engagement
  • Learn how to work in teams and adapt in a professional atmosphere
  • Gain experience working with diverse communities
  • Develop community engagement and outreach skills
  • Learn about waste prevention solutions
  • Learn how municipal governments operate and how the public can engage with local government
  • Learn about Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative, and how it impacts various programs throughout the City

There is currently one undergraduate or graduate internship available and is projected to start early to mid-May. This internship is for 12-18 months, or graduation, whichever one comes first. We require a 1-year commitment for this internship opportunity.

 Job Responsibilities:
The intern will work with professionals to:

  • Identify, schedule, and staff community engagement activities, such as presentations, trainings, classes, farmer’s markets, and community events
  • Develop content for engagement activities, such as presentations and interactive activities
  • Manage material and supply inventories for engagement activities
  • Deliver materials to residents, businesses, and community groups
  • Develop social media content
  • Update web site content
  • Conduct research
  • Update email and mailing lists for grant program promotion
  • Manage data entry and prepare reports to track project outcomes and lessons learned
  • Provide logistical support for workshops, trainings and events

NOTE: This internship will include occasional weekend and evening work.

 Qualifications:
Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Agriculture and Food Systems, Community Stewardship, Communications, Public Policy and Administration, Education, Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Studies, Anthropology, Social Welfare, Sociology, or other closely related field.

Students must be currently enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis for the duration of the internship and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA.  Exception: Students are not required to be enrolled during the summer sessions, but must provide documentation of continued Fall enrollment at the end of Spring quarter.

Licensing: A valid Washington State driver’s license is required for this internship in order to operate a City vehicle to attend outreach events.

 Additional Information:
Hours: During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (18-20 hours per week). The internship opportunity may permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. Work is normally between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday.
