Climate Policy Intern
The mission of the Green Climate Fund is to assist developing countries to respond to climate change while bringing prosperity to their peoples.
Established in 2010, the GCF invests in transformational climate projects in the developing world. The Fund makes an ambitious contribution to global climate action and channels significant financial resources into developing countries to help build low-emission and climate-resilient societies. It is country-driven and undertakes actions which reflect the circumstances of each country concerned and its national aspirations. The GCF is a key enabler of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
Since its establishment, the GCF has mobilized 10.3 billion USD, accredited 75 entities to channel its resources and approved 93 funding proposals for a total investment from the GCF of over $4.6 billion. In addition, the decision has just been made to launch the first replenishment of the Fund.

Internship Assignment
The Intern will provide operational and administrative support to the Office of Governance Affairs (OGA). S/he will have the opportunity to learn and expand her/his experiences by providing assistance to the Climate Policy team within OGA. This team is responsible for a number of policy-based activities, including the relationship of the GCF to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process and engaging with other international mechanisms for delivery of climate finance.
Under the overall guidance of the designated primary and alternate supervisors within the Office of Governance Affairs, the Intern is expected to:
- Assist team members in activities aimed at strengthening the relationship of the GCF with the UNFCCC. This includes providing administrative and logistical assistance to preparations for GCF engagement in UNFCCC meetings (such as meetings of the subsidiary bodies and Conference of the Parties (COP)). This also includes assisting in the process of gathering and compiling quantitative data and qualitative information for the annual GCF Report COP;
- Assist team members in activities aimed at strengthening the relationship of the GCF with the constituted bodies of the UNFCCC. This includes undertaking research on thematic issues relating to the constituted bodies and keeping abreast of and preparing notes on topics under discussion by the constituted as they relate to GCF.
- Assist team members with tracking and reporting on international climate finance. This includes preparing background notes, briefing notes, and other materials relating to climate finance and GCF engagement with the UNFCCC Standing Committee on Finance.
- Provide research support and administrative backstopping for the team in the development of Fund-wide indicators for tracking and reporting on funding for technology-related activities;
- Support the team’s efforts to report to the Board on matters relating to Climate Policy.
- Perform other assorted tasks as directed by the International Climate Policy Specialist, such as desk review and research for inputs to the evaluation of policy-related Board documents.
Requirements and qualifications
- Enrolled in Master’s program in international or public affairs; environmental policy or management; climate change; or related fields;
- Knowledge of and/or experience with UN agencies or multilateral organizations; international negotiations on climate change; development or sustainable finance; climate policy; climate finance flows;
- Prior working/internship experience in the operations of international organizations is an added advantage;
- Proficiency in using standard software programs: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access;
- Excellent writing and presentation skills;
- Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of another United Nations language, in particular French and Spanish, is an advantage.

The above criteria should be seen as indicators of the experience and skills that would qualify candidates for consideration. Selection among short-listed candidates will also take into account performance at interview, appropriate testing, and references.
