POSITION DESCRIPTION

Hydroinformatics Intern

Position: The Western States Water Council (WSWC) is looking for an engineering intern with experience in the field of hydroinformatics and application development to work part-time (up to 34 hours per week) in its office, located in Murray, Utah, for Fall 2019 (September to December or January and potentially to May 2020).

Overview of the WSWC: The WSWC is a non-partisan government entity that serves as a resource and advisor to the governors of 18 western states on water policy issues. The WSWC’s members are appointed by their respective governors. For more

Duties: The intern will assist staff and members in improving the WSWC Water Data Exchange (WaDE). WaDE

2.0data exchange architecture and platform is designed to provide streamlined access to water allocation, supply, and water use data that are provided by the state water agencies. As needed, the intern will assist the WaDE Program Manager and receive training in developing WaDE 2.0 by carrying out the following tasks:

Write code in R or Python to scrape water rights and water use data from member states’ online portals into WaDE 2.0 data templates in CSV formats.

Document, retrieve, maintain, and organize water data (including maps and GIS data).

Create web feature services and customized mapping interfaces using one of the following tools based on WaDE users’ needs: ESRI’s ArcGIS online, Leaflet, Tableau, R/Shiny, and PoweBI.

Preferred Qualifications (please address them in the cover letter):

Enrollment in accredited college in a computer science, hydrology, environmental science, water resources or environmental/civil engineering program.

Experience with programming languages such as Python or R.

Experience with relational databases and SQL.

Experience with ArcGIS or QGIS.

Experience or knowledge with GitHub is a plus

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Familiarity with and desire to learn more about western water policy issues.

Ability to work with others and accommodate multiple viewpoints.

Eligible to work in the US. International students will need to arrange for CPT or OPT with their schools.

Compensation: Based on experience and qualifications.
