Dr. Elizabeth Koebele at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) is seeking a graduate student research assistant (GRA), beginning in Fall 2020, to work on an interdisciplinary, collaborative project about sustainable urban water management in the United States. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Dynamics of Integrated Socio-Environmental Systems program (award 1923880). Co-PIs include Margaret Garcia and Marty Anderies at Arizona State University, Aaron Deslatte at University of Indiana, and George Hornberger at Vanderbilt. GRA duties include the collection, analysis, and synthesis of qualitative and quantitative social science data related to water management.
This 20-hour/week, 12-month assistantship is available to a student pursuing either an MA or PhD in UNR’s Political Science Department, preferably within the sub-field of public policy. Qualified students interested in pursuing their MS/PhD via UNR’s Graduate Program in Hydrologic Sciences or Environmental Science Graduate Program will also be considered. The applicant must meet basic admission requirements for their graduate program of choice and apply by the program’s Fall 2020 funding deadline in order to be eligible for the assistantship. Note that requirements/timelines vary by program. A prior degree or work experience in environmental policy, environmental studies, water resources management, or a related field is preferred. For PhD applicants, an MS degree in one of these fields is preferred. Students from underrepresented groups in these fields are encouraged to apply.
The assistantship includes a competitive stipend, tuition for 9 credits/semester, and health insurance. It is renewable for 1 additional year (2 years total) contingent on satisfactory progress in the GRA position and toward the chosen degree. Students willing to commit to the project for the full 2-year assistantship term will get priority. The University of Nevada, Reno is a R1 University located at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe and 3.5 hours from San Francisco. The Reno-Tahoe area boasts world-class skiing, biking, and hiking, among other activities.
