We are seeking an Education Coordinator to develop and manage the new Parks Teen Internship Program, a type of youth conservation program. The program will hire youth interns (15-18 years old) to complete a 7-week, 30 hour/week outdoor program during the summer. Interns will work with staff at multiple King County Parks’ locations to learn about conservation, environmental stewardship and parks and recreation management practices. The program will provide growth and learning opportunities, foster positive work relationships, and support youth in experiencing the work life environment. This position will work with internal and external partners to create this new program by working with schools and community groups/partners for outreach and recruitment of intern applicants.

Work Location: varies based on program needs.
Work Schedule: This position normally works a 40-hour week, Monday through Friday. This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible.

Key Job Duties:
- Develop and implement the King County Parks Teen Internship Program focusing on outdoor and environmental work with policies, goals, performance measures and guidelines that align with the Parks Mission, King County’s Strategic Plan and Equity and Social Justice goals.
- Create engagement strategies to assist in the development and ongoing success of the program. The process will consider the diversity of our communities, including culture and ethnicity, and seek to create an inclusive and accessible process.
- Work with internal and external partners, schools, community-based organizations, and other youth groups, for outreach and recruitment of intern applicants.
- Manage the intern recruitment, application and hiring processes.
- Act as lead for training, supervising and mentoring interns on a daily basis throughout the internship program.
- Develop evaluation methods and tools for gathering outcomes and for continuous improvement of program.
- Stay abreast of new developments in youth education and internship management best practices, and their applicability to the needs of the program.
- Ensure that program aligns with participant needs and organizational objectives.
- Work with staff to create the Parks Teen Internship story, videos and testimonials. Update website and other media to share those materials.
- Develop program reports for Parks Division management team, DNRP leadership team, Executive Office and Council.
- Coordinate and attend milestone events and other public events related to program.
- Manage financial resources.
- Partner with and support other Parks programs with educating youth on conservation and environmental stewardship.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a strong educator with exceptional organizational and process management skills, have experience in developing programs for high school aged youth, have excellent oral and written communication skills, be politically and interpersonally savvy, possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team with a high degree of accountability, and be committed to delivering first-rate customer service. Candidate will be able to demonstrate success in the following:
- Experience working with youth (age 15-18 years old) from diverse racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Experience creating and teaching educational curriculum and materials focused on environmental stewardship.
- Ability to design practices, processes, and procedures with minimal oversight.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, including ability to maintain strong ongoing relationships with partner groups.
- Demonstrated leadership and consensus building skills. Ability to manage expectations.
- Ability to find creative solutions and figure out the processes necessary to get things done. Can simplify complex processes.
- Good at focused listening, reads situations quickly and can find common ground. Steps up to conflicts, seeing them as opportunities.
- Exceptional cultural competence and sensitivity; ability to communicate across cultures.
- Demonstrated success in program management with good judgement about which creative ideas and suggestions will work.
- BS/BA degree in education, environmental studies, or equivalent experience – highly desired.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- An offer of employment will be contingent on successfully passing reference and criminal and driving background checks.
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and walk up to 2 miles on uneven surfaces.
