Job Summary
The WM Recycle Corps collegiate intern program is a fast-paced nine-week internship focused on the latest strategies in engaging the public and businesses in waste reduction and recycling behavior change. The internship is designed to provide a diverse group of energetic and responsible students with hands-on experience in the field as recycling educators.
This position provides an opportunity to work with communities across the Puget Sound. We are seeking a diverse group of applicants, from all cultures and communities, to best connect with the businesses and residents of this region.
WM Recycle Corps interns represent the company in various public venues, on a variety of outreach projects. Interns will primarily conduct door-to-door and phone-based education campaigns for businesses and multifamily communities in addition to staffing education booths at community festivals.

Essential Duties and Qualifications
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for recycling and composting
- Strong verbal communication skills for working with businesses, property managers and the public, one-on-one, to provide information that promotes recycling, composting and waste reduction
- Ability to engage and educate the public at community events through recycling-themed activities and conversations with customers
- Demonstrate effective communication, customer service and teamwork skills
- Work efficiently while maintaining attention to detail
- Able to be flexible and adapt to changing situations while remaining positive
- Work effectively in a diverse, collaborative team environment, with other team members
- Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, Russian or Somali is preferred, but not required
Position Requirements
- Must be available to participate in the internship from start to finish: 6/22- 8/17/2020
- Must have completed at least one year of college and be enrolled as a college student in the fall of 2020
- Must have a cell phone for periodic use
- Must possess an insured and reliable vehicle and be able to travel to and from locations throughout King, Snohomish, and Skagit counties. Personal vehicles will be used to transport outreach materials including tables and tents.
- Capable of lifting 30 pounds
Work Environment
- Required to exert physical effort in handling objects less than 30 pounds
- Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements
- Normal setting for this job is outdoors, either visiting customers at a business or apartment complex, cart tagging in neighborhoods, or tabling at a community event such as a farmer’s market, city festival or holiday celebration. You will be responsible for driving or carpooling to these locations.
Program Overview
- This is a paid internship, full-time (approx. 40 hours/week), with possible opportunities for overtime
- Eligible candidates must be able to start Monday, June 22, 2020 and work through Friday, August 17, 2020 Some shifts start at 8:00 am, and others will start in the afternoon. On occasion, shifts will begin as early as 5 a.m., and other shifts will end as late as 11 p.m.
- Internship hours rotate between Monday-Friday, Tuesday – Saturday and Wednesday – Sunday depending on the week.
- The program’s focus is split between outreach campaigns (60%) and staffing the WM recycling booth at community events (40%)
- WM Recycle Corps Headquarters is in Kirkland, WA, but interns will be assigned to primarily staff outreach campaigns in either South King County (Auburn, Federal Way, Tukwila etc.) or North King County (Redmond, Kirkland, Snoqualmie etc.)
