Position DescriptionSeattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking one (1) graduate intern to help support the RainWise Program. This program provides rebates for the installation of rain gardens and cisterns on private properties to reduce the number of combined sewer overflows in SPU-prioritized neighborhoods. The intern will support a variety of program aspects, generally focused on outreach and education, including, but not limited to, the following: increasing equitable and racially diverse customer participation, recruitment of new customers, community event-based RainWise outreach, RainWise 101 workshops, administrative management and participation in the regional Green Infrastructure Partnership, and survey analysis of customer input.

The internship is projected to start in late-June and will last for up to six (6) months or graduation, whichever comes first. This internship will require occasional weekend and evening work.

Learning objectives include but are not limited to:

  • Draft and implement communications and public engagement strategies for RainWise projects and programs.
  • Craft and implement strategies to improve internal and external stakeholder engagement.
  • Coordinate with SPU Communications team as a liaison for program.
  • Develop business writing and editing skills within a utility setting.
  • Assist with outreach to underserved communities.
  • Learn about Green Stormwater Infrastructure programs and technologies.

Job ResponsibilitiesThe intern will work with professionals in activities such as:

  • Assist with community outreach strategies and tactics, including drafting letters, leading presentations, planning events, notices, press releases, survey analysis, data management, and disseminating information.
  • Assist with the production of marketing materials for community meetings/events and represent SPU at meetings and/or events.
  • Assist with the development of internal communications and social media.
  • Perform other administrative duties as required.

QualificationsEducation: Applicants must be currently enrolled pursuing a Graduate degree in Environmental Studies, Business, Communications, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Political Science, English, Marketing or closely related field.

Students must be currently enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis for the duration of the internship. Students are not required to be enrolled during the summer. Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA.  Verification of applicant enrollment is required at time of application by providing a current unofficial transcript.

Licensing: A Washington State driver’s license is required in order to operate a City vehicle to travel to outreach events, community meetingsAdditional InformationHours: During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (15-20 hours per week). The internship opportunity may permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. Work is normally performed between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday. Evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.
