The UNEP/CMS Office – Bonn is seeking an intern for three to six months’ duration, to assist with tasks related to the development of CMS Resolution 10.19 “Migratory Species Conservation in the Light of Climate Change”. Working with the Science Unit, the intern will assist in the development of a Programme of Work on Climate Change and Migratory Species. S/he will also assist in the preparation of a workshop on Migratory Species and Climate Change, to be held in early 2014. Assistance with other tasks related to the Science Unit, e.g. the development of other CMS Resolutions,  conservation projects and Action Plans, and assistance in scientific publications and drafts, may also be required. The internship will be implemented under the general terms and conditions of the UNEP/CMS Family Internship Programme (see http://www.cms.int/secretariat/internships.htm).

Requirements:

  • Interns should be university graduates or students enrolled in a tertiary course of study, ideally in the field of environmental science, political science, natural sciences, biology, zoology, ecology, or similar.
  • The candidate should have experience in scientific research, literature review and have access to online literature and journals (e.g. through university affiliation). Previous experience in climate change is required. Experience in conservation of migratory species is desirable, but not required.
  • Strong English language and writing skills are essential, illustrated by a number of past literature reviews, publications, projects or reports.
  • Good computer skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Knowledge of a further CMS working language (French, Spanish) would be an advantage, though not essential.

Apart from contributing to the work of the UNEP/CMS Office, the internship position offers a good opportunity for young people to become acquainted with the work of the United Nations, and to experience a multi-cultural environment. The position will be based in the UN Campus in Bonn, Germany.  All expenses related to the internship, which is not remunerated, must be borne by the individual or by a sponsoring Government or institution. Proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan must be provided in advance. Please note the UNEP/CMS Office cannot provide visas – it will be the responsibility of the successful candidate to obtain a visa if required.

The intern will work with and be supervised by one or more of the professional staff in the Science  Unit. The start date and duration of the internship are flexible; the position is available from mid-October onwards.

Applicants are required to submit (i) the CMS application form (available at http://www.cms.int/secretariat/internships.htm), (ii) a curriculum vitae, and (iii) a one-page cover letter that elaborates the applicant’s experience, skills and suitability for the position. Applicants should submit these application materials to secretariat@cms.int by 15 October 2013 (deadline). Earlier applications are encouraged. Informal inquiries can be sent to the same address. Applicants will be informed of the outcome as soon as the selection process has been finalised. Short-listed candidates may be requested for a phone or Skype interview.
