VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANT (1) needed between about 18 Jul and 27 Sep
2011 for a seabird monitoring project at the Barren Islands, Alaska. We will collect information on breeding success andpopulation size of common murres, black-legged kittiwakes, tufted puffins, and fork-tailed storm-petrels; on diets of murre and puffin chicks; and on growth rates of storm-petrel and puffin chicks. Some of the work will be conducted by observing cliff-nesting birds with binoculars; surveying burrow-nesters andweighing and measuring chicks will be manual. The crew of four will live at a field camp on the island and commute to study areas in a small boat and by hiking. Some basic rock climbing and rappelling are necessary (training provided). This position offers excellent opportunities for viewing seabirds and other wildlife, but conditions are often windy, cool, and damp. Applicants should be in excellent physical condition, able to make careful observations over long periods of time, and able to work and live happily in this environment.
