Compensation: $50/day intern stipend (MSHI) + $30.80/day volunteer stipend (USFS); housing provided.
Term of Internships: April 27, 2015 – September 6, 2015 (flexible end date)

Summary:
The Mount St. Helens Institute and US Forest Service are seeking motivated a Science Education and Interpretation Intern. Intern will work full time with 50% of time with the Mount St. Helens Institute on 1) informal science education programs and 2) community outreach and will work 50% of time with the US Forest Service conducting Junior Ranger programs at the busy Johnston Ridge Observatory. Intern will be provided with practical job training in environmental education and interpretation. Intern will be expected to work on weekends. It is the responsibility of the Intern to complete paperwork with his or her university necessary to receive credit for the experience; Mount St. Helens Institute and USFS staff will work with Intern to meet their educational and professional goals and craft a valuable individual learning experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Implement and staff overnight youth educational programs
 Conduct Junior Ranger program
 Assist with guided hikes and interpretive programs
 Assist with field trip planning and logistics
 Attend outreach events
 Review and assist with curriculum development
 Host overnight visiting groups
 Provide visitor service at visitor centers and on trails
 Clean and maintain facilities and maintain supplies and equipment
 Complete other tasks as directed by supervisor(s)
Required Qualifications:
 Enthusiasm for the mission of the Mount St. Helens Institute and the MSH National Volcanic Monument
 Sophomore, Junior or Senior status at or recent graduate of a university of college
 Coursework in Education, Biology, Geology, Environmental Studies, Recreation or other related field
 Organized and self-directed
 Comfortable working outdoors in adverse weather
 Work well in a diverse team and be a self-starter
 Experience and comfort working with school-aged children
 Pass a pre-employment or post-hire background screening and criminal history check
 Have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years
Preferred Qualifications:
 CPR/First Aid Certification (more advanced certifications preferred)
 Wilderness First Responder Certification. Preference will be given to applicants with this certification.
 Personal vehicle (optional but preferred)
 Experience working at a camp or education center
 Ability to complete the full term of the position

Location:
 This position will be based at the Science and Learning Center, 40 miles east of Castle Rock, WA on the northwest side of Mount St. Helens
 This location is remote with little cell service
 Housing in comfortable government houses with a shared room are available
