Would you like to become a Community Scientist, to help evaluate how floating wetlands might affect salmon smolts and localized water quality in the Duwamish River? The Duwamish Floating Wetlands pilot project, led by the University of Washington Green Futures Research and Design Lab, seeks Community Scientists to join research observations and data collection from May 2019 – August 2019. This summer, the Floating Wetlands Research Team will be monitoring four “Bio-Barges,” or vegetated floating structures located at two sites on the Duwamish River. We need your help on the project! Monitoring takes place on and off the river, so we can use your help collecting data on and off shore. Opportunities to participate on the project include:
Monitoring + Research on the Boat (4-5 hour time commitment, 1 day a week).
Starting Location: The Port of Seattle Terminal 102 at Harbor Island Marina
- Observe fish, specifically species of juvenile salmon
- Collect water quality and biological performance data
Monitoring off the Boat (30 minute time commitment, flexible days of the week)
Locations: Terminal 105 Park and Diagonal Avenue South Public Access
- Observe and record floating wetland plant growth and environmental conditions such as the weather, tides, birds and/or wildlife in the area, pollution, and bio-barge structure stability
At home or school:
- Watch underwater footage of fish behavior collected from the floating wetland
