Purpose of the internship:
UNICEF is supporting the Government of Guinea-Bissau, in collaboration with its partners, to promote child rights, knowledge, behaviour and social change for children, with focus on disadvantaged communities. Through its WASH section, UNICEF programme is supporting the Government of Guinea-Bissau, non-governmental organizations and community leaders to promote and improve Water, Sanitation and Hygiene practices in institutions (schools and health centres) as well as communities of Guinea-Bissau.
The WASH programmes operate through engaging with communities and institutions staff to assist in their desire for better hygiene and access to water. The WASH programme also supports government to develop norms and standards as well as developing communication products and assist in setting up monitoring systems. The monitoring systems in Guinea Bissau for WASH covers all aspects of the water and sanitation spectra and are well advanced. An overview of the current data monitored can be seen through this link http://bit.ly/WASH_GB There is a momentum within the office to further expand these systems to other sections and exciting opportunities to be in the forefront of data management.
The newly established WASH in school programme has a special focus on girl-friendly sanitation including Menstrual Hygiene Management. Several communication tools were developed and are currently implemented in targeted schools. A sanitation marketing programme is also being implemented to provide more options to adolescent girls as well as families to manage their hygiene and sanitation needs. The products include menstrual cups, water filters and sanitation pans.
How can you make a difference?
The Intern will be working under the supervision of UNICEF Chief WASH in close collaboration with other sections, especially health and Education. She/he with frequent travel to the project areas all over Guinea Bissau but especially in Tombali, Quinara, Gabu and Bafata.
Tasks
- Assess students, teachers and other stakeholders’ perceptions in relation to the WASH in schools Girls Club package and the implementation of the package in schools. Assist in the development of school posters, further improvements of the hygiene club guidebook, Wash in School manual for teachers, image album, WinS leaflet and “Livro de meninas” taking into account students’ perspectives.
- Work closely with ministry and NGOs to ensure quality data collection through mobile-based survey form and visualize results in dashboards utilizing the monitoring software (mWater) used by the WASH section. Â Assist in visualizing and utilizing data as well as assisting other sections in the use of the tool
- Support public events related to WASH; World Water Day, Menstrual Hygiene Day, Global Handwashing Day and World Latrine day
- Follow-up on sanitation marketing for MHM products (menstrual cup sales and sanitation pad production/sales), sanitation products (sanplats and Lixl pans) and products for water safety planning (water filters), updating statistics and collecting customer satisfaction feedback.

- Be enrolled in a degree program in an undergraduate or graduate school or recently graduated (max 2 years) in a related field (engineering, GIS, international development, marketing)
- Be proficient in at least one of UNICEF’s working languages: (English, French, Spanish) and have working capacity in either Spanish, Italian or Portuguese.
- Have strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
- Have no immediate relatives working with UNICEF.
- The internship is open only to international candidates.
