The program, which is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Sea Grant College Program, enables fellows to work for one year on congressional staff or in a federal agency, where they study, implement, and even create marine policy. 12 congressional positions and 40 or more agency positions are available each year.

The NMFS-Sea Grant Joint Fellowship Program in Population and Ecosystem Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics places Ph.D. students studying in one of two priority areas in three-year research-based fellowships. The program is designed to fulfill workforce development needs identified by the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and since 1990 has provided opportunities for 126 Ph.D. students.

Science Communications fellows work for two academic quarters on a range of communications projects, from writing articles for the Sea Star newsletter to developing web content. Fellows are given the opportunity to develop their portfolios as writers and communicators, building bridges between scientific information and public understanding.

This two-year program provides on-the-job education and training opportunities in coastal resource management and policy. Fellows are matched with state coastal resource agencies and nonprofit organizations to work on projects proposed by the hosts and selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office for Coastal Management.
