Marine Lab Internship, Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) is a private Not-for-Profit organization dedicated to the conservation of coastal habitats and aquatic resources on Sanibel and Captiva and in the surrounding watershed (http://www.sccf.org). The SCCF Marine Laboratory is a member of NAML/SAML and has 7 resident staff, three of whom are Ph.D. level scientists and a grants administrator. One of the three scientists also serves as the lab’s GIS/Database administrator.

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) Marine Laboratory, situated on Tarpon Bay in the J.N. ?Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is seeking an energetic and hardworking intern who is looking for hands-on experience in marine and estuarine-related research efforts. We are looking for detail-oriented individuals who will assist on a variety of ongoing research projects and develop an independent project/experiment under the direction of the resident scientists. Preference will be given to applicants with GIS training and is considering the fields of environmental or aquatic/marine sciences as a career. Qualifications:

Requirements: Applicants should have a strong undergraduate background in the aquatic and/or marine sciences, including additional coursework in GIS environmental, ecological, or related sciences. The successful applicant will be expected to assist with lab and field efforts and develop an independent research project within 1 month of arrival (with our assistance) and complete the independent project during the internship. The intern must be able to swim in water of various temperatures and have a mask, fins, and a snorkel for field work. The successful applicant will be required to participate heavily in the work of the lab, sometimes involving long hours (potentially evening or weekends), often under difficult field conditions (must be able to lift 50 lbs.). The intern should also be prepared to work in subtropical conditions, including typical south Florida’s hot and humid conditions.

Recently graduated with a BS in Geography, Biology, Environmental Sciences or related fields with interest in pursuing graduate studies.
