Environmental Education Intern

JOB DESCRIPTION: Join a small team of summer environmental program staff at Chintimini Wildlife Center in Corvallis, Oregon, in developing and leading four, week-long day camps and programs for 8-15 year old students. Assist regular staff with public programs, special events and the development of program materials, curriculum and/or displays. Camps will beconducted in a full-service yurt equipped with internet, microscopes, projector and laptop, with an informal classroom set-up. Outdoor experiences will be held on Chintimini’s 10 acre property with habitats including grassland, wetland, riparian, and deciduous bottomland forest. Native flora and fauna are abundant and will be studied extensively for all summer camps.
Required to participate in 4, week-long summer camps from June 25 to August 10, 2012. Intern will be expected to design (with the help of Chintimini Staff) and lead daily activities.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE: Intern will gain an understanding of and experience with the processes involved in successful program planning and leadership. Time will be allotted for the intern to work on mutually beneficial projects specific to the intern’s educational goals. Interns will also have the opportunity to learn about overall Chintimini Wildlife Centeroperations by observing daily rehabilitation procedures and non-profit organizational structure.
QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS: Applicants should have approximately two years of course work in environmental education or interpretation, outdoor recreation, or natural resource related scienceswith an emphasis in wildlife. Must have strong communication skills, be energetic and enthusiastic about our natural world, enjoy working with people of all ages, and be able to work as a team member. Experience leading environmental education programs in an outdoor setting a plus. Must possess a current, valid driver’s license and be able to provide own transportation. Applicants will be required to complete CPR/First Aid certification and a background check.
Internship involves working primarily outside in all weather conditions, with frequent walking of up to 3 miles per day. Requires a sighted individual (vision corrected to 20/20) to plan and conduct outdoor education programs. This work also requires an individual with normal hearing (corrected to within a normal audible range) for interacting with employees and public.
SCHEDULE: 4 week schedule includes the weeks ofJune 25-29, July 9-13, July 23-27 and August 6-10
WAGE & BENEFITS: $1,000 stipend plus college credit (College credit as approved by applicant’s institution and advisor.)
