The Alaska Conservation Foundation launched the Alaska Native Fund to support Alaska tribes and other Alaska Native nonprofits working to protecting the land, waters, and wildlife integral to their way of life.

The fund is designed to provide an Indigenous framework for impacting critical environmental issues while promoting innovative strategies that strengthen the capacity of Alaska Native organizations and communities.

The fund awards annual grants to qualifying Alaska Native nonprofit organizations and individuals. Applicants must perform work that aligns with the priority environmental issues and core strategies supported by the fund.

For the 2012 grantmaking cycle, the priority environmental issues are climate change, food security, sustainable economies, energy, and holistic wellness. All qualifying applicants engaged in these priority issues must incorporate a range of strategies, including policy development, leadership, communication and technology, art and expression, and gathering. In this year’s grant program, the fund also will provide up to three grants for qualifying applicants working to implement youth organizing strategies in the priority environmental areas.

In 2012, the fund anticipates awarding grants totaling $120,000. Grants to organizations will range from $10,000 to $20,000; grants to individuals will range up to $10,000; and grants for youth organizing will be $5,000. The fund provides general support for organizations with an annual budget of $300,000 or less, in addition to project support (no organization annual budget range).
