The internship will be based at the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge. San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge (SPBNWR) is located within Sonoma County and lies 20 miles northeast of San Francisco. The Refuge is part of the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The Refuge is over 13,000 acres in size and includes open bay, tidal mudflats, tidal marsh, and seasonal wetland environments. The Refuge supports a variety of estuarine wildlife and plants such as the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse and threatened California black rail.

 

Job Description

The position will support conservation activities for the National Wildlife Refuge System Inventory and Monitoring Program. The position will focus on several tasks including database entry/management and GIS (75%), literature search/summary, wildlife and plant surveys, invasive plant mapping, invasive plant removal, native plant propagation and plant restoration. Work will be based at the San Pablo Bay NWR but travel to other refuges in California and Nevada may occur (a vehicle is provided for work travel). This is a full time, 40hr/wk internship with flexible schedule as needed. Guidance and training for the above duties is provided by USFWS biologists.

 

Knowledge Required

Experience with GPS and GIS and database management (Excel, Access).General knowledge of wildlife biology and ability to perform a variety of technical tasks in this area of work including field surveys of wildlife and plants.Ability to keep detailed records of work activities, observations, and/or data collected.

 

Other Required

Personel vehicle to travel to duty station (San Pablo Bay NWR). A government vehicle is provided to conduct official work.Valid driver’s licenseBachelor of Science in biology/ecologyPhysically capable of conducting work in difficult terrain and around water. The field work is physically demanding. Sea kayaking required-training provided.

 

Stipend: $167/wk, housing not provided.
