The Community Orchards & Tree Care Intern will aid in the implementation of Portland Fruit Tree Project’s Fruit Tree Stewardship & Community Orchards programs by assisting in the coordination our Tree Care Teams program and Tree Care Workshop series, helping us maintain our existing Community Orchard sites, and develop new Community Orchard partnerships.

Time commitment: 12-20 hours per week for 26 weeks (schedule is somewhat flexible, 312 total hours minimum)Tuesday, October 2nd,2012 – Sunday March 31st, 2012
Location: You would be working primarily out of PFTP headquarters in NE Portland, but will be traveling throughout the City of Portland for site visits and events.

This internship is unpaid, but the rewards are many – including a great learning experience and the unique opportunity to be a part of a vibrant and growing organization.

Intern responsibilities:

  • Work with PFTP staff and volunteers to plan and co-lead tree care events
    (e.g. Tree Care Team sessions, Tree Care Workshops, and tree care work parties.)
  • Work with PFTP staff to coordinate and maintain PFTP’s Community Orchard sites
  • Receive new tree registrations and communicate with registered tree owners
  • Conduct volunteer outreach & workshop publicity at local events and via email, as needed.
  • Perform related tracking, record-keeping, and data entry
  • Potential for additional projects (depending on the intern’s skill set and time commitment)


Position Requirements:

  • Physical ability to lift up to 40 lbs, climb ladders, and care for trees in a variety of settings including on soft ground, uneven ground and steep slopes.
  • Flexible schedule to include many weekends and occasional evenings.
  • Familiar and comfortable with computers, including email, word processing spreadsheets, etc.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and well-organized.
  • Ability to engage in positive, professional manner with diverse populations, including project participants, partners, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Commitment to the mission/goals of the Portland Fruit Tree Project.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge/experience with fruit trees
  • Interest or experience in urban agriculture and/or community food security
  • Experience working with volunteers and/or leading groups
  • Experience with low-income communities
  • Familiarity with Portland geography and local communities
  • Valid driver’s license & active car insurance
