~*Week 7* Halted Steadicam Construction

Hey all,

A big part of my project this quarter was based on the conceptualization and construction of a few different film tools that would help me immensely when shooting. The most important tool I could have created, and legitimately started to, was the steadicam system. I had everything ready to create the rig except the specific Traxxas gimbal and the plate to mount the camera ($60 I was not going to spend until I could track down the part I needed). I looked everywhere for two, three weeks. People suggested I try eBay, so I did and was unable to find the correct model type I needed to work with the holes I had drilled/the skateboard bearing I got (thanks for the offer Kevin, literally was approached with one the next day after speaking with you). Super duper unfortunate because I was really looking forward to both the finished construction and utilization of this hardware. There’s no doubt that I’m still going to try and find the proper Traxxas bracket so I can complete the steadicam and actually use it in some productions… I still hold it as one of the most valuable pieces of camera equipment so there’s no reason for me to give up on this idea — even if I can’t use it for this project.

I really wish I had gotten the chance/tried harder after week 7 to continue its materialization but I needed to put way more time into filming and editing. Probably a good decision, no matter how much fun I would have had using it.

Unfortunately, as everyone knows by now I’m sure, you can only go so far with simple photographic appeal. I’m not thinking as carefully about it as I would about the shots. I keep having to change my story because I didn’t anticipate how much time a certain aspect would take, or a specific part of the story conflicts with another… it’s been a struggle to keep everything in line. It’s completely my fault, too, because when I was developing the idea for this film I should have been looking at the entire work as a whole and not focus on specific sections. I used the Freytag pyramid to create a general story arch and creatively locked myself inside it. After I had accomplished this, I proceeded to think about the shots I wanted to make and how I could feasibly pull them off.

Unfortunately, this meant two things. One, I was no longer putting any more time into my story, dialogue nor characters. Two, I spent way too much of my shooting time trying to perfect certain movements — and in the end I barely used any of them due to general shoddiness. I never wanted to show something that looked unnecessarily shaky or blurry, and I’m sticking to that.

I’ve also been struggling as a director, as I find myself constantly forgetting to direct along with my other jobs as the writer, cinematographer, and audio man. Definitely an improvement this time, but since I’ll be using voiceovers for pretty much every piece of footage with talking… it makes me cringe to think about the hours I have spent/am still spending on audio imperfections.
